I know about 40-50% of you probably have spyware on your PC. I don't like it because it's too annoying! Too many popups! And I have Adaware 6 on my PC. Some spyware doesn't get detected by it. So, I think Spyware should be banned from the United States. |

They probably can't bad it. But what about an big fat warning about it? Nowdays it's hidden deep in the license. But if they make an law which forces thoose companies to put an "this contains spyware" warning on their products... That would be nice. Sweden have already taken one step, Swedish web sites must state what the cookies are used for. I still rembember that "Sweden rocks" thread Ziff created about this matter... |

I think that fact speaks for itself, which makes this a stupid thread. Doh, everyone wants spyware gone; I doubt ANYONE likes annoying, usually pop-up generating, unwanted software on his/her computer. And even if this thread gets filled with "I hate spyware, ban it from the US!"-posts, it'll achieve nothing, nothing at all. On a side note, why just the US? Think the US is the only thing being bothered by spyware or what? |

well...even if Congress bans the software, it is going to be tied up in the courts...i think that Do Not Call List is still getting some legal action from telemarketers... i dunno, i see spyware something like that credit card companies do and that stuff is legal...so, i think spyware (the people who want to put it in software) will use that to their advantage... |

AIM never had popups for me, and Trillian certainly fixes that ... mIRC doesn't have spyware either, it's just shareware Spyware is just about as annoying as spam emails ... no one wants that crap, but not much can stop it for good |

If you understood the purpose of this forum, you'd see that it isn't to make threads like this. They stay in General Chat, not the HW/SW forum, it's supposed to be a more serious discussion forum. That having been said, I'm moving this thread to general, although the fact remains that if people read the licensing agreements (or at LEAST skimmed through them) they'd never get spyware/adware, or at least not the legal type. There are illegal types that go on w/o your permission but viruses are illegal too... and yet they still spread. |

Doesnt a simple pop-up blocker block spyware? Ive never really had it, so I wouldnt know... but Ive heard icky stories about spyware. Unfortunatley The US government probably wont do anything about it, even if notified.

I don't have much if any and there isn't anything we can do about it anyway...no pop-up blockers don't stop spyware....I use both ad-aware and spybot s&d on both of my computers regularly so there shouldn't be a problem...

They're different things - popups, are, well, popups, spyware is actual auto-executing software sent to your computer, so a popup blocker doesn't really help much. Some spyware does induce popups, though. (edited by Ultimanium on 03-15-04 10:02 PM) |

I don't see why the hell spyware's legal. It's an invasion of privacy (especially when it reports your activities back to people; isn't that illegal to do without the user's knowledge?), it slows down your computer, and it clogs up tech support with people asking why they're getting popups when they're not online. It practically is a virus.Originally posted by Yiffy Kitten There are illegal types that go on w/o your permission but viruses are illegal too... and yet they still spread. Virii (as I like to call them) come on their own and are started by a single person with very little way to tell who. Spyware comes packaged with software and is made by a corporation, making it very easy to identify who did it. Penalties tend to be a lot harder for corporations, and it's also much easier for them to get caught, so I doubt many would make spyware if it were illegal. The whole idea with virii is that it's hard to figure out who did it. |

I think Spyware is ultimately stupid and not needed ... If you use common sense, and know what the hell your doing on your computer you should be fine in the first place. And my pop up blocker for my SBC Browser works wonders for me. |
