I'm just going to put this back on topic.
The war in Iraq in my view is a war against the leader Saddam who, last time I knew, was captured and I believe the war should have ended at that. What do they want now?
Also Australia shouldnt be in the war because we are only there to support America, all we have recieved from Iraq are threats that if we continue to back America something will happen to us. We get no recognition for our help in the war, most of America had no idea we were helping in the war.

The war should've ended with the capture of Hussein, but it didn't. There are still rebels and insurgents just trying to kill us off. There are many more responsibilities now, such as destroying the rebels, scouring the place for weapons of mass destruction, helping a new government, and then pulling our boys out.

I don't like the war, but, so what? It happened, and you really cannot do anything about it. The war was a good action, to get rid of Hussein and look for weapons, but a waste of human lives, the death toll was at 700 the last time I heard...

700 where? On the U.S. side, or Iraqis? Right now, they are just playing peacekeeper there until a new government can be put in place.

tinzeee, you CAN just go in and take the power away from the dictator. That's what we did.

LostAuzzie, a lot of nations are helping the U.S. out. If I remember correctly, I believe Japan and other nations are also sending us aid. In these days, pretty much every nation has threats against it. And if something does happen, i'm sure America will repay them for thier help.

I'm sure you'll agree with me that Austraila is not a wuss country. You guys can handle it.

If our support and friendship is that conditional, that if we don't do exactly as is wanted, we get criticised and berated, labelled cowads and appeasers and, indeed, wusses... what is that support and friendship actually worth?

Yes, but if we're that dependant on following the US into a war we have no business in, to curry favour and get support, then what is the "friendship" and "alliance", really? Friends don't berate friends for being cowards and appeasers and wusses.

Okay, apparently what I said was blown completely out of proportion. What I meant was that every country has threats, and if attacked, Austraila would be strong enough to take it if it happened. That's all.

Jarukoth: Apoligies. Kinda just reacting to the "Spain are cowards and appeasers" vibe I've been getting on other boards, seeing it everywhere now, and relating it to Australia of course...

I think Legion's point is the way I feel too. Nobody is going to ever agree if it was right or not in our generation, just like nobody in Vietnam's generation could agree if it was right or not. Our generation thinks it was pointless to meddle in someone else's business because of our fear of communism. The next generation will probably think it was pointless to go in and meddle in the affairs of the middle east. We should have never gone into Kuwait to stop Saddam, and we shouldn't side with Isreal. Let them fight their own wars. Why do we need to get involved with civil wars because we think one side is right? Nobody got involved in ours...

I don't think that in ten years people are going to feel about the war in Iraq the same way that most people feel about the Vietnam War today. Ithink this way because, unlike communist Russia, terrorism will always be a very real threat.

700 people die in a year, that does not a quagmire make. 100 people died in this month! Oh my! Should I quote some Vietnam figures, to get a comparison to a real quagmire?

People call it a quagmire at the moment because.. things are relatively bad at the moment, yes. If 20 troops die a month, and then suddenly 100 do, you may be tempted to cry out, "quagmire!" But shouldn't we wait until it actually looks like our objectives are at a serious threat for failing?

A quagmire (from "quake" + "mire") is, literally, shaky, miry ground; as a political term used to describe a foreign military campaign in which there is either no forseeable possibility of victory or the objectives are unclearly defined, and at the same time no clear exit strategy has been formulated in the absence of victory. The military campaign is likened to a kind of swamp or marsh in which the warring nation is unable to remove itself.

Typically, a quagmire occurs when a major power attempts with little success to subdue a foreign guerrilla insurgency. Often matters of national pride or belief in military invincibility are the cause of the lack of an exit strategy. The classic examples of quagmires were the American involvement in the Vietnam War and the Soviet war in Afghanistan. It is often humorously suggested that the best way to resolve the military impasse associated with a quagmire is to simply "declare victory and go home."

~wikipedia.org

While the U.S. strategy (or lack thereof) is sketchy, the thread of some kind of popular uprising that would seriously jeapordize our goals at the moment is pure conjecture.

Well technically it wasn't a quagmire because we successfully removed Saddam. Right?
