Okay, I'm trying to get Mario to move a certain way for my title screen movie. Here's what I do:

1. I install the ASM via Chelsea's Bonus Menu.
2. I open the rom in ZSNES and go to "record movie" or something like that.
3. I click the button that says "record".
4. I record what I want, and click "stop" when it's finished.
5. I open Lunar Magic and select the savestate for the installing.
6. Lunar Magic says "There is no data recorded in this savestate!"

I've tried simply pressing F2 to save it but get the same result: Mario's
motions don't change. Any help?

You're going about it wrong. Here's a step by step that should be more than enough info to make your own demo.

1. Install the recording ASM hack.
2. Load your ROM in ZSNES and enter the level that you plan to have the demo in.
3. Make a savestate at the Mario Start screen.
4. Play the level however you like.
5. Make a savestate when you are done.
6. Load the savestate into LM by way of the Chelsea menu.
7. Uninstall the ASM hack.

And you're done. It might take some fiddling to get the right level to be enterable from the overworld, but I recommend making a dummy level within the range of levels you can actually enter from the overworld and recording your demo on that.

Or better, make a savestate with you standing at the beginning of the level BEFORE installing the ASM. Then install it and load your hack and open that savestate. Switch to another state, and play on. You may continually save and load savestates as you go through the level. It won't do any harm and it'll work.

I didn't put the steps in that order because I wasn't sure if it would work. I don't remember what order the steps were in when I recorded the demo for my hack.

Here's what I do.

1) Edit an early level in your hack to contain a warp to the Title Screen Level.
2) Save it.
3) Load up ZSNES, open your hack and start playing
4) Go into the level with the warp. Enter the warp.
5) After the transition is finished, savestate as fast as you can (you can also opt to save before or midway through the transistion).
6) Exit ZSNES, and load up Lunar Magic and your hack
7) Enter the Chelsea Code as usual.
8) Install the recording ASM.
9) Load up ZSNES again. Open your hack, and the savestate.
10) Immediatly switch to another state after loading it and savestate. This will help out a lot in case you screw up.
11) Start playing. You can use and switch savestates throughout the level, which is a great thing (my current title screen took an hour to get right, if it weren't for being able to continually switch and save I'd have a problem)
12) When you're done, savestate and take note of the savestate number.
13) Exit ZSNES and load up Lunar Magic again
14) Enter the Chelsea code, and uninstall the ASM. Now go to the third option in there, and select the savestate that you noted.
15) Load up ZSNES for the final time.
16) Sit back and watch. Watch it at least 3 or 4 times. If anything goes wrong, then go back to step 8. This is why I make a backup savestate for starting this process.

That can cause the game to skip a small bit of recording initialization code during level loading, not to mention that if there are any sprites on the first screen, you have a pretty good chance of messing up the timing for playback.

Install the ASM recording code before trying to enter a level on the overworld, and then you can make your initial savestate at any point you like without having to worry about the timing of it. There is no advantage to waiting so you can install it later... whenever you enter a new level (whether from the overworld or from an exit in another level), it re-initializes itself anyway.

And yes, you can of course make/load as many savestates as you want while playing the level itself.
