I was in a four-wheeler accident about six years ago, and lost my left foot. Now, I don't have any big problems with it, I can take care of it myself, but is that strange? People seem to like picking on me becasue of it, and no one ever says why. I really don't care, but could someone explain to me why people are like that? Why are people so dammned hostile to what is different? Just wondering.

Why? Because people are Jerks. Period. For every good person out there, there are ten other jerks who enjoy tormenting people who are different. There really is no good reason for it. That's the best explanation I have. Sorry if it doesn't help... |

did something magical happen to cause you to lose your foot? no.. it happened through natural causes. it's totally natural are you in high school? in high school everyone else is going through so much stress that they take it out on everyone else. anybody who is different is going to stand out and will get more attention. try not to let it bother you too much. peace (edited by frantik on 04-20-04 06:36 AM) |

Well, people aren't exactly jerks. It's the fact that people usually can't easily abide to different things for some reason. Same thing is happening right now, with gay people. There's nothing wrong with gay people, but some people have been going overboard about it and just instantly start hating them because, it feels insulting to their culture and such. Basically, I don't really care if a person is gay or not, what they think about things in general is one of the things that should be looked at. If they knew the story behind the fact you lost your left foot, they would probably think different, but I don't understand why people do that. Calling them jerks just doesn't explain it to me. There's SOMETHING behind the whole thing. I'm sure if the people that picked on you lost their foot, then they wouldn't be saying shit to you about it anymore. I highly doubt you're unnatural. The fact that you lost your foot doesn't make you weird or odd. Besides, it would be a little unnatural if things of that kind didn't happen. Just take their meek attempts of lowering you to a minimum. I'm pretty sure that's the best way to go at it. |

Thanks. Guess there really is no reason for them to be like that, so I'll just leave it at that. I really don't care whether they make fun of it or not. I do know one thing though. If somebody gets to be too annoying, I can stick my foot in their ass and come back for it later.

I have a friend with a muscle disease that pretty much he is forced to be... in a wheelchair all the day. (his muscles is getting weaker and weaker all the time...) Anyway, people are usually afraid of people that looks or act diffrent. And some are rude... In which way do they pick on you? Picking on someone's weakness is not very nice thing. |

People threaten to take my leg and beat me with it (which is technically impossible since only the user or someone knowing how to can take it off). I also just basically get picked on for having only one "real" leg. Which kinda sucks, because in my opinion the artificial one is far superior to flesh and blood.

Picking on someone who has a missing foot? Fuck them. That's not even human. I mean anyone over the age of 6 ought to have enough ethics to be smarter than that... I keep hearing stuff like that, stuff that I can't believe about kids being mean to each other, and I'm pretty sure it's a US thing.. Kids tend to bring others down, often in front of everyone, to feel stronger... In my years spent in middle and high school, the horrible ones were 8th and 9th grade, when I was in the US, I was the nerd, people picked on me a lot, very openly too... When I went back to france, my self esteem was incredibly low, I was going to be the new guy, big nerd, everyone would make fun of me... Well, no... In france there are no nerds, there are no popular kids... The cool kids could very well be people who stay on their computer all day long, have good grades, etc... I remember there was this guy one grade above me who had a disease ever since he was little, he had a wheelchair but he could get up and walk as long as he had a wall to hold on to... He looked pretty weird walking really slowly, always leaning against the wall, yet I've never heard anybody making fun of him, hell, if anybody talked about him regarding his problem, it would be out of compassion. My class? There were no small groups of friends, we were 36 people in that class and we were ALWAYS together for recess and lunch... This is something I never witnessed in the US. The reason? I think there's a certain spirit of competition, with everyone wanting to be the popular kid and all. To stay on top, you have to beat the others, whatever it takes, and that's pretty much what the mentality is.. Look at everything in school... The average is not a fixed number, you only get an A if you did better than everyone. What about percentiles in standardized tests?? What the fuck is a percentile supposed to be? Who cares how the others did? The problem is that everything's like that, the big fish eats the small fish, and if you're not the big fish, you're a frickin loser... Some people need to brighten up. A lot of people do.. |

One of the greatest problems in the US is our cultural diversity. You can have too much of a good thing. Over here, racial and cultural groups separate during social events, and will clash like tigers over the smallest things. I'm the kinda guy who keeps to himself and tries not to be in the way. I'm considered very strange at school becasue I never say anything, and I never stop reading. The only time I say something is to tell someone to get away or leave me alone. They never let people like me live it down when something embarrasing happens. Like once, I was walking down the hall, and stopped to help pick up someone's books, slipped in some water from the fountain, and my leg went sliding down the hall. Wasn;t a fun experience trying to get it back, and to this day people still refer back to that whenever I actually do something right for a change.

Heh. I thought that one up one day during soccer at school. I had accidently skinned this dude's leg up with the metal part of the leg, and he wouldn't stop knocking me down and cursing at me, so I made that little comment. Worked very well. In fact, he hasn't spoken to me since.

People are idiots. They only pick on othre people because at some stage in there life they were picked on. It a huge never ending circle of people picking on people because they were picked on. It makes me sad your just like any other human. I'm glad you've been able to think of the positive in this one. |

Originally posted by Kiwibonga Well stated, Kiwibonga! I think that's one of the main reasons, and probably the most sensible reason behind this whole insulting others. Though I don't think that this kind of thing is happening only in the US, but mostly. People may not be exactly idiots, but quite a few people have exercised a great deal of arrogance about things. Also, it could be what blackfire said as well, which is people that was dealt damage to in the past, is dealing it back to others now. Which kind of get things in a circle of corruption, and then one thing will cause it to go so far that it will brighten up everybody. Disliking others will only make things worse, I believe. I try to treat everybody with some respect, though I just have to get that same respect in return, and I don't mean attention. I'm not really competiting for anything and I try to at least be helpful when I can. I really only compete and jokingly insult with my friends, but it's not anything that would be any harm. I think it's better to come up with a enlightening comeback than just a comeback... |
