| I've noticed that when you install and uninstall different ones, they leave behind a lot. Specifically, I want to tell the computer that it can't multiboot between 2000 or XP and 98 anymore. The leftover files from Windows 98 (they're not in C:\windows) need to be gone, but I'm not sure what's safe to delete. My root directory is messy because of this. Removing the registry entries for boot.ini might do it. Any suggestions? Also: this issue is simple, but has a very confusing origin. It's too complex for a post so I'll add some details later. |

| you can safely delete any old windows folder without worry about messing up stuff. if you don't want the OS selection screen when you boot up, i believe you need to have only 1 line after the "[operating systems]" section of the boot.ini file. i think the safer thing to do is to set the timeout field of [boot loader] to be 0 and make sure default is set to the OS you want to boot up. |

You can always try to move the old windows folder somewhere, or rename it. It's probably safe to delete it but better be safe than sorry. ![]() BTW, what's the content in your boot.ini file? ![]() |

| The only files you need in the root of your boot drive for WinXP are: boot.ini IO.SYS MSDOS.SYS NTDETECT.COM ntldr These are all hidden files. I also have an autoexec.bat and config.sys, but both are empty and neither are executed. To boot WinXP, all you need is: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect It will automatically boot into WinXP with a timeout of 30 if it's the only OS in there, the timeout is how long it displays a list of options in this case, say safe mode, if Windows failed to boot properly last time. |
