Edit: The editor has been released. The URL to Excite Track is:
http://vbvanguard.freewebspace.com/excitetrack.html

Feedback is appreciated.

Can any mods change the title of this thread to "Excite Bike Editor released!"? That would save me from starting a new thread. Thanks

For the last few days I've been working on an Excite Bike editor. I found all the data I needed and so far I'm doing well. I expect that it would be finished in a few more days, although I get stuck on some parts . Before I do finish it, though, I want some opinions on whether it would be a good idea to have an Excite Bike editor, or if anybody is interested in it. Any suggestions would be nice, too.

The current features:
Edits all 5 tracks.
Edits objects added to the alternative track.
All objects are viewable in the object selector.

Anyways, here are the promised screen shots:

Even though VB is not my language of choice, I wouldn't go around posting negative comments about the programming language used, in threads about new level editors. Mainly because this community needs all the utility creators it can get. What programming language a program is written in is largely irrelevant, as long as it fulfils its function. It could be written in Brainfuck for all I care, as long as it works.

Anyways, on the topic of the original thread, I remember looking into Excitebike when I was only new to ROM hacking. An editor for this game would be great.

I'm definitely interested . . . I have always wanted to use the in-game editor actually . . . Imagine it: Edit levels on your NES emulator of choice, then use another program to rip the level out of the RAM and save to the ROM in the appropriate spot/format/etc...

In any case, I'm looking forward to this. Looks great so far.

BTW- Brainfuck is an easy language to use. An example follows:

Start
  Wet
  Lather
  Rinse
  Repeat Until Clean = True
End

Strangely enough I was never into excite bike as a kid. I was all about Ice Climbers back then. Still, it's good to see you back in action man! It's been forever since you've been active in the scene, you sly scene lurker, you. I'm confident you did a decent job with the editor, as well.

Also, why the HELL should vb vanguard learn anything other than visual basic? Then he wouldn't be vb vanguard anymore ;-;. C++vanguard doesn't have the same ring to it.

Edit: and just in case you don't remember (because we hardly ever talk anymore) I used to be MavrikNyne in TEK.

Corrects: The game had a level creator. You couldn't edit the main levels, just create new ones (and if you wanted another level, the only choice was to overwrite the level you just created)

[off-topic]i've always wondered why the title song changes randomly. it's like some channels get disabled [/off-topic]

I'm not saying he should, just that I figured he would. Once you get into CPU-heavy stuff like emulation, VB's limits make themselves quite apparent. (Pointers rock too.)
Besides, this isn't a C vs VB thread, this is an Excitebike editor thread.

Then he wouldn't be vb vanguard anymore ;-;. C++vanguard doesn't have the same ring to it.
Vanguard++.

Edit: and just in case you don't remember (because we hardly ever talk anymore) I used to be MavrikNyne in TEK.
Is that directed at me?

That's Brainfuck? Then what's the one where you write words and their score in Scrabble determines what instruction they represent?

Thanks for all the replies. I see there is atleast somewhat of an interest to my editor. To answer some questions, the in-game editor only lets you create your own levels. If you beat the actual tracks and get 1-3rd place, you will go to the next track, which will be exactly like the last track except with new obstacles thrown in. My editor will allow you to edit both. I might add a feature where you can import your custom made tracks into the ROM, but that's unimportant to me at the moment and it would possibly be included in later versions if I ever get to it.

And yes, I still use VB. No shame in that. Does the job alright. And even if I start to use C++, I'll still be vbVanguard. Or possibly vbVanguard++...

Hey, of course I remember you! I remember all of my old TEK buddies. I've seen you around on the board but I never knew you were MavrikNyne. That's awesome. Thanks for welcoming me back into the "scene". However, I'm not really dedicating a lot of time into ROM Hacking so don't expect me to be that active.
