Don't you mean hacks where the villain is the main character?
I also showed this to the guys at work ICeGoom, they really liked it.

SWEET MERCIFUL CRAP. This is one of the most visually impressive SMB1 hacks I have ever seen. Very nice work, dude.

Well, I for one am impressed. You've gone in and re-drawn things, re-adapted them for your purpose, rather than just copying-and-pasting graphics from other games. You're open to bug reports, constructive criticism, contributions, and above all learning, and in general you seem to be on the right path: what a hacker ought to be like.

And even for drawing your own stuff, you draw them quite well too; I like the concrete blocks and the little crazy Wario heads, they fit perfectly into the whole motíf and don't look like they were scribbled out in MS Paint.

I'm not much interested in SMB myself, and SMB has a remarkably high proportion of crappy hacks (compared to other games) but this looks to be a good, serious hack, done by a good, serious hacker who may be relatively inexperienced compared to some of the masters of the craft, but definetely has the potential to join their ranks someday: a newbie, but not a n00b. These things are an exception to much of what has been observed. For that, I commend you.

Now, when are you going to hack FF1?

I'm really glad people are enjoying this hack. Has anyone played it through to the end yet? I tried to make it more challenging than the original, but not so hard that it could only be beaten with savestates.

Thank you for the kind words, Vystrix. I certainly hope I can one day become as good as some of the great hackers around here.

Final Fantasy would be fun to do. I've got some ideas I'd love to try out in an RPG, but I'm probably not advanced enough to attempt them yet. I'm currently working on a hack of Super Mario Bros. 2, which is one of my favorite NES games, and after that, I'd really like to try a Zelda II hack.

You patched the wrong ROM, I'm guessing.

Someone needs to tell me how to fix the problem, or upload the IPS patch somewhere else, because I cannot get anything from freewebs for some reason.

Gecko, try downloading it here. If that doesn't work, recommend me a site you can download stuff from and I'll try uploading it there.

Stifu: Hmm... Looks like the lines don't quite connect on that frame. I guess I just need to add another pixel?

Not sure... Gotta find out why this is happening (if possible), and exactly how the frames are different... Comparing left and right frames, side by side. Does this "wrong mirroring" also happen in the original SMB1 ? If so, you could just try to tweak the frame a bit to make it look fine on both sides...

By the way, I think the difficulty in your hack is fine... It's enjoyable to play, and I like all the new enemy sprites, they look good and replace the old ones quite well. That's why I thought I'd give you a hand. Googie can learn a bit from you...
However, your hack is a bit short. Do you plan to make it longer, or are you done with it ? It doesn't *have* to be longer though, of course... I guess making it shorter than SMB1 gives it a different feel, like the "war" between Bowser and Wario is a relatively short one... Blitz Krieg style.

I saw this thread and played the hack when it first came out but had not had the time to comment until now. I must say I echo pretty much everyone else's sentiments, so I don't have anything new or incredibily insightful to add. That said, the hack is definetly visually pleasing and well thought out. I really really enjoy the Bowser character sprites, very cute . Well done all around it seems. Looking forward to more hacks from you.

Oops! I'll edit that in right away.

I don't think the problem is with mirroring. There are two frames for Bowser climbing, and I just didn't properly connect the line in one frame.

I've considered lengthening the hack, but I probably wouldn't do the full eight worlds. I don't really like repeated levels. I also moved a lot of objects and enemies out of the later worlds into the earlier worlds so they wouldn't be so empty. (Especially 4-4) If you beat the game and use the B button to select a world after world 4, you're going to run into some glitched levels. (If I knew how to remove the option to select the later worlds, I would have) I probably have enough objects left to do two more worlds.

IceGoom: I took the time to open your hack with SMButility for ya, you have about 9 level left to play with without being glitched. Did you use SMBU or that other SMB editor? Cause in SMBU go into Sort Areas and you can push down what level you don't want. I hadda do that with a SMB hack me & other people are working on. These are the level that look fine in SMBU after I put back 8 worlds...

5-1, 5-2, 5-4, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 7-2, 8-1, 8-4.

I hope I was somewhat helpful to ya's, any other Q's slap me a PM.

Stifu: Thanx...

Haha, what I said wasn't so bad really... You've got some talent, but your hacks still have glaring flaws, I'd say.

Insane difficulty and new enemies with "misleading properties" are my main complaints, as I told you on my board... Also, his enemies just fit AND look better... But that doesn't mean you or your hacks suck.

No harm done, lol! I give anyone props who can draw in their hacks.
