So, you guys sick of Super Mario Bros. hacks yet? Well, tough. Here's another one.

My main project is a Super Mario Bros. 2 hack, but I'm having trouble getting the hang of the Discombobulator, so for the past few weeks, I've been working a SMB Hack starring Bowser as a side project. It has four worlds worth of brand new levels and almost entirely original graphics.

The story goes like this: A band of Koopas had finally overcome Mario and were bringing him back to King Bowser. But on the way, Wario and his goons swept in and captured Mario and the Koopas. When word of Wario's brazen act reached Bowser, he was understandably outraged. He decided that he himself would storm Wario's fort, reclaim Mario, and then finally do the pesky plumber in.

Screenshots:

And you can grab the patch here. (That's got Stifu's new Bowser sprite. For comparison, the old hack as pictured is here) I used the version of SMB with the title screen to make this, but the no title screen version seems to work all right, too.

This is the first hack I've ever released, so I hope that everything works all right. Let me know what needs to be improved graphics-wise and gameplay-wise. I might expand this hack to a full eight worlds, but then again, I might not.

Thanks. The pipes are modified from Yoshi's Island, which is my favorite Mario game graphically. Has anyone checked to see if the patch works? I'm a little nervous that I didn't do it right.

Played the first level. Totally awesome. You should make Bowser's fireballs shoot straight, since that's the way his fireball typically shoots.

Oh wow, this hack looks great. The pipes look like they are from YI - where did you get the spring board GFX? Looks sweet though, I see no glitches whatsoever

When I saw the thread title, I was thinking the player would be Wario and the enemy would be Bowser. And I was thinking "You know, this would be so much better if it was the other way around."

And then it actually turned out to be the other way around.

You read my mind, and made a shiny-looking hack while you were at it.

Good job.

Wow. It's not often that graphics in a hack impress me, but in this case, even though I'm not much of a fan of SMB1 hacks, I simply have to post to say how good I think your hack looks. Very nice job; its graphics are great.

Thanks. I've already got Wario as a playable character battling Bowser in my SMB2 hack, so I thought this would be a nice turnaround.

The springboard myself I drew myself. The pipes are one of the few things I didn't draw from scratch.

I'd considered making Bowser's fire fly straight, but didn't get around to implementing it. What I'd really like to figure out how to do is make it so that Bowser shoots fire by default, even when he's little. And then if he grabs two power ups, he gains the ability to throw hammers in addition to fire. It's probably not possible for him to throw two different types of projectiles, but that's my little dream anyway.

Small bowser shooting fireballs sounds like it should be a relatively simple ASM hack. Somewhere there must be a comparison checking if the RAM location 0756 is set to 02, and if true, shoot a fireball. Just change it to always shoot fireballs, instead. You probably need to change one opcode from BEQ (Branch on EQual) to BRA (BRAnch always) or something like that. (I am not familar with 6502 ASM, only 65816 ASM, so I may be a bit off.) See the RAM map for more information.

I do not remember SMB1 supporting throwing hammers. I thought that was in SMB3. Have I just not played SMB1 in too long?

Hammers aren't a normal ability, but there's a patch out there that changes fireballs into hammers. Googie recently used it in his Luigi's Chronicles hack. There's probably no way both abilities could be supported in the same hack, though.

well, there are hammer bros. in SMB1 that throw hammers . So, I guess you could use those sprites.

Anyway, good job icegoom. This is a really good graphics hack . I hope to see
more from ya.

First of all, I would like to compliment you on an EXCELLENT hack. I love this thing..

The graphics are awesome, I love all the new enemies and such... And the Koopa at the end of each world is great.

Second, for some critique.. I think that the Spineys should be a bit more... Spikey... But other than that, I love the graphics..

Second, there are two glitches I found in 2-1.. One isn't that bad, but you can break the bricks out from under a pipe, results in an ugly floating pipe that just.. Ends..

Second, I can jump over the flag.. I think you might be able to in 1-3 as well, I just know that I was close.

In 2-2, you can still glitch into the square above the pipe, and get stuck. Most SMB hacks fix this, and you probably should too..

But I love that one pipe that makes 3-1 a lot easier... Gwehehehe.

And I got stuck on the top of 3-4.... It was really easy to get up there too, I thought you wanted it like that.. >.> Making a player wait for the time to expire so he can die = Bad...

Also, you should make the graphic for the extention of the Bullet-Bill Cannons.. Because they're still the original, and look bad compared to everything else..

I only played to 4-2.. But I loved just about everything, other than what I noted.

Ooh, thanks for catching those. I tested the levels several times, but I guess a few things slipped by me.

All of those level glitches should be fixed now. I'm not familiar with the glitch that allows you to get stuck in 2-2, so I hope that taking away the wall extending above the pipe fixes it. Ugh, I can't believe I missed that you can get on top of 3-4. I hate getting stuck and thought I'd caught all those.

With the spinies, my reasoning was that Bowser is a fiery creature, so touching an ice creature would be deadly for him. But yeah, they do kind of look like they should just crumple when he stomps them. I'll try extending their head crags a bit. I'll also fix the Cannons when I get time.

Coolest graphics for SMB I've seen yet. Some of the levels look similar to the original SMB levels. And like Shadic said, you can almost jump over the flag. That can easily be fixed by moving the flag pole a little. Anyays, this is an overall excellent hack. Nice work.

I don't think 6502 has BRA, strangely enough. You'd want to change the value that loads, probably something like changing LDA $0756 to LDA #$02.
