I direct your attention to this image in particular:

It's obviously doctored, and if you need convincing, just look at Auron's outfit. (Nevermind the vines jumping around or parts of the image splitting up, look at Auron, specifically. He's the guy in the red shirt.) How many colors is that?
Red, 1, purple, 2, light-blue, 3, gray, 4, skin-tone, 5, yellow, 6... <-- anybody picking up the red flag? NES palettes are 4 colors, 3 plus the black/transparent.

So, yeah. I call bullshit on this.

I do see a couple nes demos and nsf files on the site though...
But anything that contains a pure color yellow is fake. The NES can't display yellow.

How can anyone even begin to think that's real? Just look at the Japanese text, the "9999" damage, the slash mark, the bad guy's hair (is that hair?), the little blue ball that guy throws...those are all approximately twice the resolution of standard NES graphics.

How has such a pathetic hoax received so much attention? It's been posted on nearly all of my usual messageboards!

Has anyone considered that just maybe the screenshots shown were simply concept art?? I mean.. I went through almost every directory and there are a -lot- of screenshots detailing a lot of stuff that certainly could fit into an NES game even if the picture was doctored. I wouldn't say it's a hoax as they're obviously doing something with it. I also wathched a .gif movie file of a scene that lasted well over 5 minutes all in 4bpp graphics.. If I was a gambling man, I would put my money on them developing the game from scratch, possibly borrowing routines from the original if they have it disassembled, and of course the graphics and such.

That working .NES file that dwedit posted is only 44kb and doesn't seem to have much code at all.. it could be a stripped rom, or an original creation. I've never seen the FF3j disassembly, so I wouldn't know. But I hardly think it's just a "hoax".

Not mention I also saw a few tools on the site. I didn't really figure out what they do, but one of them appeared to be a name table editor / generator which didn't actually load from a rom as far as I could tell. Unless those tools are also a hoax...

If it is concept art, it's poor concept art. The Japanese font is way too fine and smooth for NES, the slashes are clearly drawn with MSPaint's line tool, and things keep jumping around.

why don't you actually look at the site instead of judging one shitty screenshot. .

oh, and by the way, I just found this. it's the beginnings of a game engine that with NES graphics on top. hoax my ass. like I said, they're obviously doing something.

The sire seems to repeatedly switch from FF2 and FF3, and no, I'm not talking about those obvious FF3 links. The actually shots (including the all characters shots).

I looked at the site. All I saw was a lot of broken Japanese text displayed as garbage. I didn't exactly feel like poking through some website I couldn't read. For all I knew it was a 404 page or something.

We'll have to wait until they make a full release. The 44kb nes files only contains a map having only two islands without monsters with an airship in one of them and a "maybe" infinite sea. The mapper used in that nes file is mapper 1 (saw with nnnesterj), which i think is the same as FF2

well no offense, and not that I care much, but by that logic why look at any page?? I mean, why would this page be more likely to lead to a 404 than any other?

I agree with Gavin because it is true that some of the animations and screenshots look like they could come from a NES game...but, there are also .nsf files on the site that give me even more faith that this is a truly spectacular project...

So, if the screenshots and the small .nes files don't convince you, listen to some of the .nsf files...

The idea may be a bit too ambitious, but some of the screenshots are interesting, at least. I really like the .nsf of the FFX Prelude, too. That along with the recent music work on Dragoon X Omega II really gives me hope for future ROM hacks with new music put into them.

EDIT: but then again, Schpune's not the NES
