Sucks to be those people in Cancun, Mexico.
That category 4 (140 MPH) hurricane is pounding the hell out the Ukatan Pennisula.

I just heard a few things about it last night and this morning. I wanted to go to Cancun . So it's at a category 4 at landfall right now?

It's not like Cancun will be thrown into the ocean forever, Bella.
One of the many reasons I love CA. No hurricanes. Those look like crap.

This one suprised me somewhat... Wasn't it predicted to head north after reaching the coast of Florida, instead of crossing into the gulf?

I heard Hurricane Betty is coming along, too.

In all seriousness, we've had enough hurricanes for one year. I hope this one isn't that bad.

That would be a great thing Peardian. At least if it hits shore as a cat 1 or 2, things won't be as bad.

Pressure wise, this is the strongest hurricane on record. Woot.

I didn't want to work Saturday, but with this thing going as slow as it is, I might have too. I might not work Sunday, but then I'm screwed anyway since Monday and Tuesday are my days off. Oh well. At least I'll get paid for Sunday if I stay home.

Anyway....

There's about three tracks this thing can take:

1. It meets up with that cold system and heads for Ft. Myers and then towards MIA and Ft. Lauderdale. This would be bad. My grandmother and father both live in Ft Myers and will take a direct hit. I know they won't come over here, b/c they're stubborn like me, plus they won't leave the animals there (11 cats and two dogs {one of which they are watching for a realtive who went up to NC and won't come down until this passes}).

2. It meets up with the cold system a little too late, pushing it up a little bit, which will move it north of my family, but I might get some of it on my end of the state, but it would be more or an Orlando type issue (Hi Kirby!!!!!)

3. It stalls. It missies the system that could push it our way all together and then it will go back the way it came, this time, a bit more north, now hitting the lower Keys.

1 & 2, if correct, will mean the storm will weaken b/c its been over land for some time. Its said that it will be a Cat 1 or 2 at Fla landfall. But, the Gulf is still warm, so I think it could be stronger than what they think.

With #3, it could get stronger and perhaps stay at a Cat 4.

Either way, I'm worried as all hell but I'm pretty much ready on my end.

Anya,

It's actually the strongest on record in Atlantic, but not the whole globe. (Typhoon Tip in, I believe, 1978 went down to 870 mb.) Strength of a tropical cyclone is measured by air pressure, not wind speed. Wilma went down to 882 mb beating Gilbert (1988)'s record of 888 mb. It also beat the Labor Day Storm at 892 mb (1935) and Rita at 897 mb (2005). Wilma's formation also caused the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season to tie for first place with 1933's season, with 21 tropical storms; and to tie with 1969 with most hurricanes in a single season. And also to beat 1960 and 1961 (both with 2) for most Category 5 hurricanes in a season (we've had 3, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma).

It's also the first season since alphabetical naming began in 1953 to go up to the letters V and W; the first season to exhaust its list of names: The next storm that forms in the Atlantic will be named Alpha; following will be named Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, etc.

So yes, quite a season.

Did anybody notice Vince?

She herself said she was too stubborn, therefore she will put up with them until the end of time, or her death, whichever comes first.

Good luck Anya.

I hope Wilma doesn't turn out to be too bad, I have a lot of friends down there. Of course, they've all weathered through plenty of hurricanes -- I'd guess most of them are smart enough to be prepared.

Yes, I did. I've been keeping track of these things all season.

Vince was a tropical storm going into Portugal/Spain. Here is a good image!

We´re worried about you too, Anya. Let´s hope it doesn´t head your or my brother's way.

He´s in Pensacola.

"In all seriousness, we've had enough hurricanes for one year. I hope this one isn't that bad."

Haven´t you read the news? It´s the strongest ever recorded. Pressure-wise. It might cause houses to explode due to the different pressure in and outside the houses.

They say it´s dangerous to barricade your house too.

I knew that Wilma was the strongest in the Atlantic area, I just failed to mention that.

At least this time around, if the power goes out, there's no food in the fridge to go bad, so I guess no money wasted there.

Funny, this hurricane is srota pissing everyone off and they have no clue what the hell its doing, as written here. At this rate, I'll work Sunday, have me two days off and then Wilma will hit Wed., which is fine, then I can have that day off.

But really, we're already getting storms from this thing, as its been raining all last night and into today. Not good for places that like to flood. So pretty much, its going to be a carppy for the next few days here.

Hey traps, no need to freak out about this thing. Your bro is fine, he's up in northern Fla. This is going to hurt the southern part of the state. And its ususally the torrnadoes that "blow up" the houses. Yes, a hurricane can blow up a house, but its usually from the outside in.

We're finally in a hurricane watch! I might not work on Sunday after all. But of course, dad is in a watch as well.
