NESToy simply does not work on my Windows XP computer, at least not just by clicking on nestoy.exe. I need someone to tell me one of two things:

1. How do you get NESToy to work on Windows XP?
or
2. Are there any Windows XP-compatible utilities that will repair corrupt NES ROMs?

NESToy is a command line program, that means you have to open up cmd (Start -> Run -> cmd) change directories to the place where you put the file (the "cd" command) and then run nestoy.exe.

If you're running Win2000 or WinXP you need to change the Win2000 parameter in the .cfg file from FALSE to TRUE.

What's this mean? I'm not exactly experienced in these.

In windows, go to the folder that NESToy.exe is in and press the key combination Windows-r. It should bring up the run dialog and in that dialog type the letters cmd. Hit enter. That will bring up the old DOS command line. By doing it in windows from that folder, you should already be there in DOS.

Next, type NESToy.exe and hit return.

The command line should show you a usage list. I don't know what NESToy is used for, but more than likely the usage will look like this: NESToy.exe myromname.nes

When I do that, it says "'NESToy.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

By repair corrupt NES ROMs, do you mean fixing bad headers? Because otherwise, I'm pretty clueless because I don't know how a program is supposed to simply repair any old corrupted NES ROM you have lying around. If you did indeed mean bad headers, you can use tnines, which works just fine in XP (although it is a DOS program); just drag the ROM onto tnines in explorer and it'll work its magic. Good luck.

Example (assuming you placed the NESToy.exe file in C:\Games\NES):

Start -> Run -> type "cmd"

Microsoft Windows XP [version 5.1.blah]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName>cd ..

C:\Documents and Settings\>cd ..

C:\>cd Games

C:\Games>cd NES

C:\Games\NES>NESToy.exe -help

That last line should give you the usage for the NESToy.exe

If you are running Windows 2000 or XP be sure to edit the NESToy.cfg before you run it though. Change the second to last line from "WIN2000 = FALSE" to "WIN2000 = TRUE"

-EDIT-

If you don't remember how to spell the folder name type in the first few letters and you may be able to auto-complete using the Tab key (depending on if you have it enabled in the registry). If you have a path with a space in it you need to put the folder name in "double quotes." And lastly, if you can't remember the name of the folder you can use the dir command. If you have a great deal of files in that folder if would be better to use dir /p

Okay, thank you. It works now. Excuse my utter cluelessness about this.
