Hi there. I am working on a hack which is called "Mario's Awakening". (If that name is already taken, please tell me) I don't use many ExGFX, but some blocks from blocktool and stuffs...
Here are the screenshots:

Some intro screenies:

Glade of Awakening, the first level:

Oh wait... I have got no time now... I have to go to the drumming lesson...
I will edit the post later and add some screenshots.
How do you like the screenshots?

EDIT: I'm back. Here are some more screenies:

Yoshis House, Yoshi is not at home.

When you go through the pipe...

The main overworld (World 1):

The dungeon (World 2):

The star world until now (...and the gate to the special World):

Last and least (for today), the Special World until now:

It's good, nothing special. I'll comment more after you post some new screenies.

It looks really good. You made a good choice not putting in ExGFX. I think it's being overused. I'm looking forward to more screens. Again, good work!

I'd have to disagree. Without ExGFX, it lacks any unique otherwise interesting level design. If your purpose involves economy (as in using less to make more) I can understand that. Other than that, quite frankly it looks boring. :\

It's just plain stupid to think that ExGFX are overused while original GFX are not. It is.

ExGFX is a system that allows you to put new graphics in your games. By leaving the old graphics in, which plenty of hacks already do, you're saying that he's avoiding monotony? What is the matter with you?

As for the hack, it does look rather boring. "Awakening" isn't in the same font as "Mario's", the blue item box tiles around the edges look ugly, and instead of giving us the damn play-by-play on your band lesson, post actual information. Or at least funny uninformation.

Also, move that constellation in the special world closer to the center.

What he actually meant was that tons of hacks tend to use the same ExGFX over and over again.

Your name makes sense, CJ...
OK, I'll try to make some ExGFX (although I am not good at ripping and stuffs) and use them, becuase the levels really look boring. I haven't done much with the overworld yet.
My first levels in my first hack were always without bushes or coins, clearer to say a crap, but I think I like good level design...? Anyway, I'll post some more screenshots with ExGFX when I have some... As I said in this first post, I don't use many ExGFX but some.

EDIT: Whoops, I haven't seen the last two posts...

Yeah, the title needs work and the overworlds need more detail (water should look like water), but it's nice otherwise.

This kind of looks pretty boring, not because you aren't using ExGFX, but because these screens take after the original levels too much. Bringing in custom palettes or changing the tilesets/sprite sets will do wonders. You always want your hack to stand out over the original, at least.

Your overworld setup in the first two screens look nice, but the ground and water need more detail. The 4th overworld screen is very empty past the moon. Try adding some stars and whatnot. The 5th overworld screen is also drab, so you need to fix that up as well.

The levels have no interest. I like the way the overworld looks, I think. It just seems a little plain in that area, that's all. Nice work though.

The overworld is nice. Though Chris is right, the screenshots do not show too much excitement. It doesn't look bad though and ExGFX does not make a hack "Good", the level design does.

Again, nothing special, looks a bit boring... The ground should have texture, too. There is WAY too much emptiness on the Special World Gate place.

I like it (the title screen with the blue awakening looks... well... the others said that already) and I have to agree that I like that no-ExGFX-use in your hack. I don't like hacks that contain things from other games. It just doesn't fit as good as the original ones. That's why I use the original graphics as well. Never change a winning team, a running system or good looking graphics. That's what I think.

Spade knows what I'm talking about! The original GFX is one of the main factors that made SMW a great game. It depends on what type of ExGFX you use. Using Megaman GFX or something like that just dosen't suit Mario.

It's alright, the OWs look great, I like the Dungeon one especially. But I think you need at least a bit of ExGFX, or something, to make it stick out a bit more Not bad though

Ehm... I haven't done the star and special World yet... There's still more coming. I haven't finished it, because I always make the levels before I put them into the overworld. (The dungeon is an excuse because I didn't want to show just the main overworld) That hack needs a bit of changing, that's true. (Didn't it say there "The star world until now" and "The special World until now"?)

I don't mean to sound completely gruff but it really NEEDS more spice. I cannot stress the originality part enough. Don't even rip GFX, just try to make something new is all I'm saying. If you're trying SMW hacking the first time, I'd suggest you keep your fiddle-work to yourself and not submit it unless you have something unique. Try to inspire and impress those who made great hacks. I've seen a LOT of hacks like this and anything without a unique quality can essentially cause a decline in SMW hacking. *ugggh!* I'll take a breather now...
