Not necessarily, although it is a public university (URI is, right?) and you'd think it would be more accountable to government policies. andyfromspace is right.

And now, an update:

We went to the Faculty Senate meeting, wore white gags around our mouths to symbolize the voice of the students being silenced, and won a small victory! The changes to the student handbook are going to be reviewed by the faculty senate and a special committee composed of both students AND faculty to try and come up with a compromise. Score one for the good guys!

Of course, this could all just be a sham to keep us silent, but either way, it's a step in SOME direction as opposed to standing still.

I have to disagree with you on that andyfromspace. As far as I know students pay for their dorms and education so the dorm should technically be the property of the student. They have the right to privacy.

While not the property of the student per se, I believe it would be not unlike a landlord/lessee relationship which would give the student privacy. But I would recommend reading the student housing contract which you undoubtedly had to agree to, because they may just make you sign away your right to privacy.

I wouldn´t ven GO to my school if they took away that many rights. That´d be my way of protesting. Or maybe some vandalising.

Good that you guys are getting somehwere.

Uhm.. #3 isn't that strange, at least not if it's heavy crime. But speeding tickets, that's just lame. Not sure what #4 would mean.. but if it's exactly how you wrote it they can basically nail you for one thing two times instead of the new evidence being a continuation of whatever was concluded the first time. That is indeed kinda lame.
