I might be on the news! Why? Check this out:

There was a student protest today at my university. The faculty senate passed a few regulations that took away student rights, such as:

1: The right to open hearings on conviction of expulsion-worthy offenses.

2: The right to privacy, that is to say University staff gained the power to search student's dorms without a warrant on the grounds of the POSSIBILITY that the student might be doing something wrong.

3: The right to privacy outside the school: The school can expel you for what you do off campus. Nice to know that if I get a speeding ticket it goes on the record at an independent university.

4: The fact that students can now be tried for the same offense more than once if new evidence has been brought to right against them, which directly violates the rights set in the Bill of Rights.

5: The dumbing down of the jargon used. Student hearings are now called "Educational Meetings" and "Guilty" has been replaced with the more public-friendly word "Responsible". Nice to know that our intelligence is being respected.

In any case, there was a protest today at my university, which I was a dedicated part of (I got to use a megaphone!). The national news was at the scene, and they were filming us. You wanna know what I look like? I'm in the front ranks of protestors, wearing my glasses, a messy black haircut, and a heavy black hoodie.

More to the point, the protest was a success: Over 200 people showed up and began shouting out against the senate at their meeting place. There were news reporters and photographers, we got a lot of media attention. I'm hoping this is a success, not so much because I feel that my rights have been violated, but because I feel the voice of the students is being taken away. We gotta support our right to free speech as adults!

I can definitely get behind protesting the first two. The third one is eh, the last two, not so much.

Yeah, we definitely made an impact today, I can't see how it's not going to go anywhere. The guys who are higher than me in the organization were able to secure an appointment with the university president tomorrow morning, so rock on! There were a lot of people who wanted to attend, but only 4 or 5 people were going to be able to. We're drawing lots to see who gets to go into the office and speak to the president, and I hope I'm one of the winners. This is gonna be awesome.

The University of Rhode Island. And they were passed without informing the Student Senate... There was supposed to be a hearing, and it was supposed to be important, but for some reason the meeting got cancelled and the changes were voted on without the input of the students. We're adults! I don't think it's right that we're being treated like kids.

That is disgusting. I wish I could have been there to protest with you. But then I doubt it'd make a difference when I don't even live in the US.

We had a similar situation in my university. It happened because the director made some invoices to the department of Industry Engineering (the department in which he belongs), but supposedly , the director can't receive money from other departments, he can only receive money by advisings on his own to external companies, not to make his wallet grow at expenses of the departments budgets. Another serious thing he made was to use the name of the university in his own business, borrowing the prestige of the university. Well, the thing is that that was a week before the election of the new director, so it had to be delayed to the next year...I don't know what'll happen then. And another important thing, only teachers can vote . So i understand you, and i hope it finishes for good.

Students must be heard!

Well, the protest went pretty well monday... Tuesday, we had an appointment scheduled with the school president to discuss the changes. The school newspaper published commentary on it, though... Apparently our president has no intention of stepping aside just yet, so we have to press a little harder.

Our next move is to protest during this thursday's Faculty Senate meeting, which I personally am hoping will turn out even better than Monday's protest. We got about 200 people, like I said, but we might get even more on Thursday!

i agree with you, but in reality, you don't have many rights. living in a dorm, it's school property, and their rules are pretty much their rules. if they wanna search your room, the have the right to. it sucks, but it's the truth.

I have to disagree with you on that andyfromspace. As far as I know students pay for their dorms and education so the dorm should technically be the property of the student. They have the right to privacy.
