I think it's the dumbest thing ever.

Xbox would make a shitty webserver for anything moderatley CPU intensive. It was designed for gaming, not serving. It has a tiny hard drive, too. PLUS you can't use Xbox live which is the main reason to buy an Xbox.

Amen to that..

I'm considering buying an Xbox so I don't have to install XP on my PC

Actually, people do it becuse they can.

Honestly I would install Linux on a X-box, if I was both rich and bored and wanted to test it out. (but as much money I have now... I wouldn't do it )

There is a similar project for Gamecube. http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=440
I found it intresting from a techincal view.

I'm going to have to disagree with your statements.

1. A Pentium-166 MMX computer would be able to run this board without any noticable speed deviations. I know some people who use such computers to run their own sites, and the speed of the site is as fast as the Internet connection.. be it 256 Kbps or 10 Mbps.
2. And 8GB hard drive isn't really that small. If you need bigger, the Xbox's BIOS supports up to 160 GB hard drives.
3. You can partition the hard drive to have Linux, and play Xbox games too. Xbox Live-enabled games can run just fine.

Now... GameCube Linux is just plain weird. GCN doesn't even seem remotely close to a PC --- Although it seems that they found otherwise. At least there isn't a ps2-linux.org site, though that is the weakest next-gen console out there, and seems to use no PC parts.

I am considering getting an Xbox to run my Web site. Then I would be free to turn off my computer when ever I want, install other OSes, etc.

Plus, imagine playing Unreal Tournament 2004 on an Xbox. Now that'll rock!

Don't see HOW you could possibly play UT2k4 on a machine with a 733 Celery with 64MB RAM and about a GF3 video card. That SCREAMS 20FPS max @ 640x480 16-bit color, low textures, etc etc... In other words, UGLY.

And I said anything moderatley CPU intensive. Yes, a P133 could handle this board, but it'd be piss slow despite what you may claim. Running the MySQL queries on a 133 would take 20x longer, meaning longer page render times, and also the queries would backlog, meaning more parse errors and 404's.
A 733 might be able to do it but, with only 64MB RAM, it would be accessing the HD a LOT, and the XBox's HD is NOT SCSI or even close. This would introduce more lag as well.

By the time you put more RAM, a faster CPU, and a larger HD into the XBox to hope it could play UT2K4 and/or be a decent webserver, you'll be out more cash than if you bought a real PC instead.
