This might have been done before, but I can't remember.

But I was thinking, what do people thing in? For example, if I'm looking at my Dilbert calendar, I think Oh that Dogbert, he's a funny fellow.

Does someone from say, Mexico think that out in Spanish?

Obviously.

Think about it. No matter how many languages you know, aren't you going to think in with the one you are most comfortable with? I mean, Mexicans who know only Spanish won't be having their thoughts in English.

At a base level, people don't think in words - babies can obviously think before they know how to talk, for example. But somewhere in the cognitive process, the thoughts are translated into whatever language you're most familiar with.

For whatever reason, that just seems odd.

Maybe it was a dumbass question, but I was just sitting in Spanish, and thinking in english what language Spanish people thought it.
Oh well, my thoughts just got all convaluted.

All of my thinking is in words...

But when you think about it, all it is is nerve pulses that translate into English to you.

Those nerve pulses could be different to everyone, thus everyone thinks in a completely different way, but the words come out the same... Werid, huh?

I have this conversation with my friend at school... Our old french teacher was actually from france, and I said "Do you think she actually thinks in French?"...

We came to the conclusion of "No"... People don't think in their prime language... Because if you think carefully, you're imagination is making pictures of your thaughts... Not words...

Or that may just be me .

I think in Norwegian and English, it varies from time to time. Now that I live in Norway, I think more often in Norwegian. When I lived in Texas, however, I thought more often in English.

That must be weird, well, it seems so to me.

Thinking in one language, and then a second later another.

I don't find myself thinking in words as often as I think visually. Maybe that's why my math is so horrid...

EDIT: Number of the beast *breakdances*

My aunt, who lived in Britain for 20 years, has a tendency of speaking in sentences which she'll start in British, but finish in Norwegian (or vice verca). She says herself that she never knows which of the two languages she's speaking, because the shifting between the two has confused her.

I have a habit of switching between English and French in mid-thought, which don't bother me much. I also think more in feelings and visuals than in words.

I've had some friends tell me about thinking in Spanish when they come back from Mexico, even if they're more "comfortable" with English....

On another note, I seem to remember the time when I switched from thinking... without words... to thinking in words. It takes a lot longer when I have to phrase stuff in my head. I wish I could go back. =o

EDIT: I'm talkin about conscious thought here, I know at the subconscious level it's all abstract anyway

I assume that if you're thinking about that...then your head must hurt...a lot.

It's whatever language and whoever in my head that drives me to thinking. For all I know it could be some leprechaun fellow that tells me to burn things...

All my thoughts are in text. Like watching a computer boot up, but with a lot of offensive comments and replies scrolling down. I have like 5 voices, or typers, who argue back and forth. And when the system needs to be rebooted, they get all agitated and mad and type vile or obscence things at me. My picture oriented thoughts are always displayed in .jpg format.

Most of the time I think in Norwegian, but I do think a lot in English, as well.

Other than that, I think in words and images (sort of like I'm playing a film in my head..). I never think in text, it's like I'm talking to myself in my head.
