Now it has come to my recent understanding that one of the reasons for the lack of use of the death penalty nowadays is the ridiculous cost, of which I was completely unaware came to over a million dollars on a median, and of course varies from state to state (I'd assume that Texas is one of the cheaper places to do this, just an assumption, however). Now, it has been joked that: "How about, you shoot them in the f***ing head. Hell, I'll do it for free. See? There, that was less than a dollar for the bullet, and I did it for free, you just saved yourself $2 million." Now although it's still not as cost effective as it could be to actually kill someone, the real costs aren't in the execution itself, I know at least this much. First off, I'd like to know where the hell all that money goes, seriously. How much are how many people paid for the death of one individual to allocate to that amount? Secondly, give your thoughts on imprisonment/executions in general (US or otherwise), I'd do it now, but I'm gonna go work out, I'll post a bit later. |

I posted a topic about the death sentence a while back, where there was some discussion. It would be a bump to post in it now, but it could be a good read for a general opinion from some board members, so here's a link. Now, I'd be all for decapitation myself. All you'd need to cover is the cost of occasionally sharpening the blade, and paying the executioner, I would assume. Of course, supposedly the head still lives for a while, and we all know that we can't let serial rapists and serial killers suffer, oh no, that'd be unacceptable... I'm in favor of the death penalty (as you can probably guess), but only when there's absolutely no doubt at all that the defendant killed the person/people. ... what a pleasant topic to discuss while I'm eating spaghetti with a red sauce and sausage chunks. Death, being the ultimate form of liberation, isn't exactly a punishment, even if it's painful in nature. Then again, our prison system sounds like a step up from where I'm living even now, and we pay for it in the U.S.. I dunno, I'm not exactly a vengeful person so killing someone, even if they did something I consider horrible, doesn't sit well with me.

The death penalty is a strong one, but I am all for it if it is used under the right circumstances. I'm not saying that if you go out and rob a bank you should die, but if you kill another lifeform of equal being (such as a human), you should suffer the pain they did. I guess that a lifetime sentence for jail would suffice if someone only killed one person, but it should be a very unpleasent experience. If you go out to a preschool and kill all the children though, that should result in death for the person. I don't get why states are outlawing the death penalty... |

There are two main reasons for outlawing the death penalty. 1. The prisons sysetm is supposed to reform and killing goes against that. (Not that many people elegible for death will be reformed...) 2. Life imprisonment is a worse punishmet. I'm against the death penalty, though it should be used in special cases or if an inmate requests it. I think life in prison is far worse than dying, but that's just me. However, I think there are bigger issues with prisons than the death penalty. |

maybe it's just me.... but I don't see a point in keeping a murderer or rapist alive with my tax dollars.... I don't really care if they suffered enough.... you want to end someone's life? then you don't deserve your own

As stated in my initial point, it costs more to execute someone these days than it does to imprison them for life. Which I find utterly ridiculous. (edited by Zer0wned on 09-27-05 11:32 AM) |

Hmmm... geeogree brings me to the executioner dilemma: 1. If you're willing to take someone's life, then you don't deserve your own. 2. Someone somewhere is obviously willing to take someone's life. 3. That person should be killed, as per #1. 4. Someone has to execute that person. 5. That person is willing to take someone's life. 6. The executioner must also be killed, as per #s 1 and 5. 7. Someone has to execute the executioner. So, that doesn't work, as you can work out just by reading this. Perhaps a solution would be to punish murderers with forced suicide. But all silliness aside, I would also like to know what that million goes towards. It wouldn't make sense for this to go towards paying anyone, as people payed per execution would logically try to ensure that there were plenty of people to be executed... The point of the death penalty in the first place is to scare people out of doing these horrible things, but being payed per kill would inspire one to instigate crime, thus nulling the purpose. So, no one is payed out of that million. What about the costs for, say, the chemicals used for lethal injections? Big doubt as to that costing THAT much money... I don't think the place of execution is responsible for paying the life insurance company or anything... Really, I don't know. |

One word: Lawyers. People will defend their life well, to the death. Lawyers ain't cheap, win or lose, and the average court time for a death sentence trial is roughly 30 days. Like I said, actually killing them is not why it costs so much, it's all the shit beforehand. |

Another reason it costs so much is the time it takes.. people can be sitting on death row for their entire lives, and that costs money. That whole time, the people have to have a lawyer, ect. It just adds up. I'm against the death penalty, though I can't really explain why. I don't think threatening with death is going to stop anyone. Half the people sentenced to it don't even get it anyway. They spend their entire lives eating up money on death row, or they find a way out of it. Lifelong time in prison, with no bail, would be enough for me. Prison without benefits like TV. |

They get internet? Yeah, that's where they need to draw the line. Those people are in line to DIE for a crime. They shouldn't get anything but food and drink, and a few pair of ugly clothes. |

Death row eats up the government money. Yeah, they get a lot of things in prison. I've heard that some people would rather be in prison because they get food, a place to live, breathe, they even take classes, TV, basically they get the works. They shouldn't get anything but food, a toliet and a bed, with used clothes. But yeah, I'd say the money goes to the person who is willing to take someones life since that was asked. Well, that's what I think and the lawyers. I agree with what Zer0wned said that its basically what's before-hand that takes up most of the money. |

I agree, Danielle, we totally need to, like, torture people and make them suffer. The justice system's not about protecting the public or rehabilitating people, it's about REVENGE AND TORTURE.

Well, it's better than giving them unneeded luxuries. Prison's not supposed to be a vacation, after all. Give them the essentials and that's all they should get. I believe the phrase is "crime and punishment". Seems that some people forget the second part. I mean, yeah, rehabilitate them when you can, but even then there should still be an element of punishment there. |
