I set my desktop wallpaper to a nice JPEG stretched to fill the screen, and it shows up fine. But later, when I view the desktop again, there's just the standard blue background. Going into display properties shows the wallpaper, and clicking OK puts it back, but it keeps disappearing.

Those would be my guesses but I'm not using Active Desktop or StyleXP. I'll just bet the problem is this 'XPDesktop' thing that installed itself with the video drivers (adds an item to the desktop right-click menu; it's some sort of virtual multi-desktop system I never use). Any idea how to get rid of it? It's not in Add/Remove programs.

I had a similar problem when I tried to play BF2 on this radeon 9250(which isnt supported) and the wallpaper disappeared for awhile, then I put it back again, and it kept doing it, couldnt figure out the problem, but it seems to have fixed itself...

what video card is it that installed XPDesktop?

128MB Chaintech Volari V3 XGI. Though upon further inspection, there doesn't seem to be any actual process running unless I open it, just a menu item. I think it might be related to the monitor shut-off timer (shuts off after an hour) or screen saver. Every morning it's gone when it was there the night before. (I rarely shut down, since during the day I occasionally need to access it from school through VNC, and at night it plays music and acts as an alarm clock.)

There's some registry key to change the context menu on the Explorer desktop, yes...

Windows XP is supposed to support GIF and JPEG backgrounds natively (earlier versions don't), but it seriously sounds like Explorer decided to turn on ActiveDesktop just for your wallpaper. Does it happen with BMP files?

Only one way to find out...

Don't suppose anyone knows how to actually remove the program, and not just the menu item? All I needed was a driver update to stop the screen from going nutty.

[edit] Nope, didn't work.
And WinXP does technically support GIF and JPEG backgrounds, but all it really does is convert them to BMPs. If you use the API to change to a JPEG or GIF file, it just stops redrawing the desktop.
