I was done with college and unemployed, and I thought I would use my programming knowledge and fuckton of free time to decode the level data for The Addams Family (SNES). I...didn't get very far.  The board was (and still is) a spiffy community, so I had plenty else to talk about, and here I am four years later.  |

Well...I think it was too advanced of a first project and I didn't have the optimal tool set for it. By screwing around with a hex editor and a disassembler, I found what appeared to be the beginning of a set of door pointers. I ran the ROM through the disassembler to see which parts of it were code so I wouldn't waste time changing them to garbage, and then I garbage-ized data blocks in the hex editor and loaded the ROM to see what I broke. At any rate, at the start of this block of data I found, I would change two bytes and the front door would lead to nothing (garbage or black nothingness). The next two bytes broke a door right after the first one. The pattern continued for a little while, and then the next two bytes did nothing and I could never figure out what the fark was going on. If I ever want to pick this back up, I'm going to need access to a SNES emulator with a debugger. Unfortunately, I am not naturally good at low-level programming, so this may not even be my type of project at all. I absolutely love the game, and I have patience for screwing around with stuff for hours on end, but that only goes so far.  Maybe I should start trying to learn SNES ASM.I also forgot to mention that I was recruited to help write an editor for Milon's Secret Castle. Now, that actually did go somewhere, but then I started working and didn't feel like getting paid to program and then going home to do the same. Later that year, I got OMG SUPAR HARDCORE into cosplay and I've been like that ever since. However...it looks like we won't be attending any more cons until far into the future (we were thinking about a March con, but Randy will probably be away on business), so I really ought to channel more of my free time into programming. At the very least, it may improve my resume and help me get a better job.  |

| Believe it or not, I joined for ROM hacking as well. Of course, the art and Mario forums became my focus shortly after. Actually, it's quite a story. Before I joined the board, I liked mapping and creating my own levels. I found Acmlm's site while looking for NES tiles I could use to put together my maps of SMB3. Then I saw Acmlm's games and realized I could make my levels, too. And... here I am. |
