Indeed, when I was taking programming classes, I could use the Unix command line, and compile my files with GCC. For programmers, there's also Xcode, which is standard with the Mac (or you can down it for free) and used by almost all professional Mac software engineers . | |||

Specifically, OS X is built on top of Darwin -- based on FreeBSD and the Mach microkernel. As such, you can port a lot of Linux and Unix applications to OS X, etc. Which is one of the reasons I keep saying that there's a LOT more to OS X than "eye candy" |
