I just started school, and on lunch break I came to browse the board. When I looked at the forums, only the posts made since I last marked them read were marked 'new', as usual. But I haven't come here from school in months, and I wasn't logged in! How did it know which threads I'd read?

It probably didn't..

It's probably because when you're not logged in, threads that were made, and have gotten replies, after a certain amount of time will always appear with the 'new' image. (And other threads that were made/got replies before that time won't) And that amount of time were probably similar to the amount of time since last time you marked the forums read.

Eh, I hope you know what I meant.

If you're not logged in, I think the new label is time based, like an hour or so.

The information that the board needs to determine whether a thread is new or not is stored on the database. The information is centralised, and doesn't matter where you login from

This is the SQL query that changes the information every time you mark a forum as read:

mysql_query("INSERT INTO forumread (user,forum,readdate) VALUES ($loguserid,$forumid,".ctime().')');

It just creates a record for you reading the forum, and sets the date you read it. Every time you enter that forum, any threads that have changed since that date are marked as new

If that's the case, then why is it when I'm logged in, everything says "new", even though there IS nothing new!?!??!

Unlike most internet forums, you have to manually mark an entire forum as read, as opposed to individual threads no longer appearing in bold, for example, as you click/view them, on a VB.
