| The gas prices rise and rise, though I even have (no money for) a driver's licence I noticed that too. Is there marketing strategy from the OPEC countries or is there something real behind the fact, the oil will be depleted in a little than more than fitfy years (there are theories that this is wrong, I have no English source currently available ...) ? The gas prices were today for 1,32 Euros per liter when I got off the boss and saw the gas station, that is not that much different from US dollars. When I think back the prices were as half as much three years ago, at leasr in Germany [...]  |

| Yeah, this is a clear sign that ethanol (not just hydrogen, dammit) is now becoming a good idea. Renewable, blendable with gasoline (up to 85% alcohol, 15% gas with some cheap and quick modifications to your vehicle), and if things keep up, it'll be significantly cheaper than gas (if it already isn't) There's also tax relief here and there on ethanol blends, so it probably already is cheaper for companies to use ethanol blends, even e10 (10% alcohol, all cars can safely handle this blend, provides an octane boost, too  ) blend. (some actually do already).Of course, as with anything there's ups and downs to this, I see it as having a lot of potential as an at least temporary aid myself. http://www.ethanol.org/ is a good place to learn a little about it (a bit biased towards itself, but meh, it's their right to do so). http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/2005/04/28_steilm_e86sales/ ... $1.54 a gallon... man (this was back in april, but still!) |

There are "rape oil" stations scattered, very rare here in some parts of Germany - but this might be an alternative. The downside is ... your car will smell like chippy  (edited by Surlent on 09-01-05 04:58 AM) |

| Yesterday morning it costed $2.64 for a gallon of regular, then when I go back to the same gas station around 6:30 pm, regular costed $2.79!!! Who knows what tomorrow will bring!? | |||

| I DON'T drive one of those gas guzzling monster trucks, is the thing... I drive a friggin' Topaz. 23 miles to the gallon. Bit-Blade, that's actually already what it's like for me. I choose eat less. Ziff, I'm just saying that OPEC should be at least demonopolized if they're gonna increase production. They can seriously charge whatever the hell they want, no questions asked. Greed is eventually going to get the better of us, especially if it costs seventy cents to produce a barrel of oil and we're buying it for over four dollars. Zer0wned, what are these "cheap and quick" modifications, and how would one go about blending the ethanol and gasoline? It's not like you can just... I dunno, pour rum into your gas tank. | Alright, so I think it was only relatively "cheap and quick" from what I read, because having a look at this web page oriented towards this, it seems like nothing extreme, but still no easy task. Some cars are already made compatable though, so it's worth having a look at your owner's manual to see if you're already set. How to mod your vehicle, but a WARNING, this site is pretty red-necky and poorly formatted. But hey, they know cars, give em a break. Before I forget to mention, I've so far only managed to see modifications that involve a carbuerator, so it may or may not be an option for those with fuel injection. Another important fact is they're called "flexible fuel vehicles" for a reason, they don't have to use ethanol blends, they're just compatable, so if there're no ethanol blend stations around (which aren't much, there's less than 150 in the US), you can still use 100% gas. As for making your own alcohol, it is against US federal law (so for you canadians/swedes/other foreign, PARTY ON!). Although for fuel purposes you might be able to get around that. I know a good amount about distilling, and if you decide to look into how to do this, you should seriously consider yeast-based techniques, they make it so much easier and faster. And yeah, don't pour the rum in the tank O_o, it's not pure alcohol... (add cost inneffective to that.... $10-$20 a liter!?!?) But seriously, people should really learn more about alcohol as a fuel source, when I get out of boot camp in november (I'll have money and be 18 XD), I'm going to see about buying some shares in ethanol companies, there's already significant yearly growth from what I've been reading. If ethanol isn't the "future", it'll definitely be a temporary relief until gas becomes more readily available (shya, right) and/or hydrogen cells become the "thing" to do. | I do not drive, but I think the gas price here (Northern Norway) just went up to about 12.47 NOK/litre, which is 1.98 USD/litre, or 7,50 USD/gallon. I do *not* need a car! (I wouldn't afford one anyway, looking at all the other costs with having and getting one anyway.) | |||

| I live nearby Canada in a small country town in New York called Ogdensburg and gas went from $2.79 to $3.15 before the end of the night! I had planned to go out and fill the car up with gas after work but found out the prices had already shot up. I don't leave my home often save for work so gas really isn't an issue for me, but I wanted to go to the mall today  The mall is a 40 minute drive from my home and it would cost about $20 just to drive to the mall and back just to have a little bit of fun on my day off. Not worth it Since I live in a tiny town there really are no other options to have fun, so I'm stranded at home Woe! I do wish to purchase a car that doesn't use so much fuel like the Europeans do, but I've always wanted to have my own truck to horde stuff around in Guess with the crushing reality of gas prices going up that it would be a waste to do so! |

| I've noticed a few less cars around the area today... my guess is everyone's crossing their fingers and hoping the prices dip down soon. The problem is that every single station's at $1.34/L around here so you can't exactly go hunting for a bargain; independently owned stations charge even more. |

| Yeah, it's weird because as you go through the neighborhoods sometimes the gas goes up or down. Like in the poorer neighborhoods sometimes the gas stations charge more here in mine it's still expensive but I go to this station that's usually a little less than what other staions are charging..I dunno why though. Maybe they get enough business or something.. |
