I read that many cops are quitting the job because of too much stress and two cops commited suicide.

One cop was desperately asking for help and told the goverment to stop having press conferences and come to help instead.

I´m on that cop's side. People are fighting, stealing, etc.

It hardly matters now that people are looting supermarkets, it's just to survive. The cops should really be focusing on helping the people there, and let down their guard about stealing for the moment. The stores are underwater for chrissake, it really shouldn't matter if they aren't getting a profit.
It's sad that a few have commited suicide because of this. =(

What's worse is that people are trying to rescue the survivors, and they are shooting them!

Danielle, some cops were actually taking part in the looting, others were trying to distribute the spoils in an orderly manner. The point is the cops were basically a nonfunctional entity from the moment the hurricane hit... only a third of them are working, many have quit, most of their stuff is wrecked, there was no command-and-control, etcetera. They were powerless to provide order, to take any sort of command.

The main reason the looting and craziness got the way it did was that there was a vacuum of civil authority due to the lack of NOPD effectivenss, that should've been filled, much quicker and more effectively, by the national guard and the military. If that had've happened order could have been maintained.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned before, but I want to pass something along. I was thinking of making a thread about this, but I might hold off for a bit.

Copied from a PM, then to a DJ and then to a LJ and then to here:

I got a PM from someone who comments on Christis live journal today and I would post a link to her journal, but its not there anymore. And the thing is, she lived in MS and I think it was Kentucky where she went to get away from the hurricane that hit there about a week or so ago. No one has heard from her, so maybe someone who reads this knows anything; could you pass it along please? Below is the message that I got:

Hi Anya, it's Venny here (not sure if you know me or not) but I'm one of Christi's friends over on Livejournal. I'm really worried because she (or someone else) seems to of deleted her LJ and of course with all the recent chaos with hurricane Katrina, I'm more than worried about her. Have you heard of any news regarding her in the past week or so? I don't know if you're particulary close friend of hers or not - but if not, is there someone (like a good friend) of hers that I can get hold of online?

Please, if you know anything, please PM myself, New Dawn Fades or Yiffy Kitten (if he doesn't mind).

Also, if you don't know who Christi is, she used to post here back in the days. The vets should know who I am talking about.

Thanks.

Yea, nevermind, you're right. The other Red Cross organizations are trying to send aid. Kuwait and Qatar are also sending massive amounts of money(100 and 500 mill, respectively) and China's sending generators. The point is, a lot of money and lives could've been saved as long as the bush administration cared to meet the needs of the people who have been pleading for extra money and better equipment. Nobody can really use the excuse that they didn't see this problem coming, seeing how scientists have been saying for decades how New Orleans is shaped like a soup bowl and one hurricane could severely damage it. Which it did.

Wtf? Wasn´t she in another state when the hurricane hit? Could it be that..not the LJ can´t be down. More people would be affected by it.

I wasn´t worried until I read this. I really hope she´s okay.
