This guy and others are holed up in a building in the CBD running off their own power.

According to their first-hand information from an NOPD officer, the police are basically non-functional and impotent, many have quit or left the city, they have no idea what's going on, most of their resources and equipment is under-water, and some cops have been joining in the looting at points.

Until they get an effective military presence it's a dangerous free-for-all, and it sounds like things are getting pretty Lord of the Flies-ish.

New Orleans is completely dead.

I was speaking to one of my mum's friends (a hydrological researcher). Basically, he said that the Mississippi is going to change its course to the Gulf. It's a meandering river and it will meander right through the swamp that NO was built on.

The city is currently under over a dozen feet of water. This water is swimming with corpses, oil and human waste. The clean up is going to take years.

A sad fact is that New Orleans might be our modern Atlantis story and the people in America and that city will have to face the fact that the city may never be on the map as a major city again.

Unless the find a new place for commerce in that region, New Orleans will return. That region was responsible for 10% of the oil that moves around in the country. In addition, there is a lot of tradition and history there that I do not believe the natives there will just abandon the city.

One of the things that bothers me was both Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Ivan were supposed to be a wake up call of such an event were to occur... Apparently, not much action was taken when these two storms came around.

I wonder though, if the levees did not break, would things be better? If this question has been answered then...okay, I'll read for it.

No. The region will move. The simple fact is that it will not be inhabitable for too many years, the response of botht he public and private worlds has been too slow. The Mississippi river, as stated, is a meandering river. Now that there is a 10% loss of land on average in an area that it flows, it will seek the shortest route to the Gulf Coast. Guess what is now the shortest way? Try through Baton Rouge. The next big swamp is the one that NO was built on. New Orleans will not be the same. It will not be a beacon of civilization. It will not be rebuilt to be a major population centre. It is going to be a very expensive industrial centre that will be hard to to keep above the water level.

We're looking at something that is a very rare occurance...And what people aren't seeming to remember is something pretty darned frightening. There are three more months in hurricane season.

And the problem is that the environment is constanly shifting and changing. Those levees were bound to break. They can't withstand a very heavy rain very well, so...Yeah. If they didn't break this mess wouldn't be as bad...But we have to remember it is still below sea level. There still would've been flooding and such. The pumps also failed...We have to be very wary about this situation. If those levees aren't repaired (the Dutch just sent their lovely experts over to help) and those pumps aren't put online...:\

And as I've said before, there is too much waste in that water. The clean up is going to take years. It is uninhabitable at this point and during the near future. Plus, anymore hurricanes will seriously hamper the folks in their hope of repairing the city.

New Orleans WILL be rebuilt. It's a MAJOR industrial hub and it is vital to the North American economy. A LOT of barges go up and down the Mississippi with the main ports in NO.

It won't be easy or cheap, but they'll rebuild it. The main problem right now is that the SLOW RESPONSE by the incompetent leadership in the government (mainly the White House and Dept of Homeland Security) has cost THOUSANDS of lives. If search and rescue missions were done EARLIER (as in the 1-3 days after the hurricane), many more lives could have been saved. The only people DOING those missions were New Orleans authorities - NO national guardsmen or anything. This is a deadly error. I truly think that this further proves the INCOMPETENCE in the White House, and Bush MUST either resign or be impeached IMMEDIATLY to prevent a future mistake such as this. He FINALLY went to New Orleans today and troops FINALLY arrived today, but ONLY AFTER Mayor Ray Nagin went on the radio and told about the grim situation in the city and told the public how incompetent the president has been throughout this ordeal. Too little, too late sadly, for the thousands of people who have already drowned in their homes or on their rooftops.

President Bush says "Of course we have enough National Guard troops." Well, if that's the fucking case, why weren't they in New Orleans on August 30th, doing emergency search and rescue missions to evacuate remaining people before the water levels rose even FURTHER due to the levee breaches.

Sadly, the people who were responsible for voting Bush into office AGAIN in 2004 are just as responsible for all these deaths as the dipshit himself. All of you should have known better. They were told he was incompetent, saw it in his first term, yet voted for him again. It's really a depressing situation to know that if we didn't have such an idiot running the country, we'd be out of Iraq by now and all those troops, instead of risking their lives for ungreatful Iraqis in the midst of a civil war, could be saving lives in these areas.

New Orleans was a man-made city, it was simply not meant to be. They've feared this for a long time for good reason. They knew this would happen eventually. Not to mention the president while at Crawford, TX, taking his vacation, knew it would hit katrina, and didnt do anything about mobilizing any relief effort. If anything, they should have had everything they could spare directly to New Orleans on the very first day! Not to mention the rest of the national guard, most of which are over in Iraq.

They shouldn't rebuild New Orleans. This WILL happen again. Its 20 feet below friggin sea level, a man-made city against what nature intended it to be. Not to mention these 'rebel's with all their guns and such are opening fire on military personell that arrived there today.

New Orleans will be rebuilt for the simple reason that no politicians will have the balls to vote against it. It'll most likely be given a blank cheque for reconstruction.

Nagin's tirade was tremendous. You can't blame HIM for any of this, that's for sure. He's doing what he can.

I dunno if Bush should be blamed himself, but certain federal departments... well... some people are going to be forced to become ambassadors of places like Jamaica and Malta. Let's put it that way. I'm not a fan of the Bush government by any means but I'm willing to cut the guy some slack here; he might have told the departments to do this, this and this, but then they cocked up themselves or downplayed it. Nice move.

He's going to be a lame duck president come the end of his term though. Someone else will take the fall.

Bush keeps saying that this whole thing was "handled poorly" and such, yet he just went today, and isn't really doing anything to help. He's not to blame for the late military arrival.. though people will take advantage of the situation saying it's because we're in Iraq still.
But he's not really to blame for a hurricane.. cmon.

Yiffy Kitten - Considering that the government of Louisiana sent Bush a letter begging for help on the 28th (PDF link)...yeah, I think he deserves a major fucking beatdown for not getting his rear in gear sooner. And even if there was literally nothing he could have done, he should have gotten his ass back to the White House and at least tried to act presidential and in charge instead of pimping Social Security, playing guitar, and generally having a dandy ol' time far, far away (link). I am disgusted beyond words.

Nagin should have given the pre-emptive evacuation order at least 2 days earlier than he did... they could've gotten nearly everyone out.

But, also, the response since the hurricane has been bafflingly slow. The NOPD was was completely shot to hell, no organisation at all. They needed a strong, organised military presence about 3 days ago, distributing supplies, maintaining order, getting people out... before things got as crazy as they have, BEFORE it got to the stage of having to declare martial law and talking about shooting to kill. Where was the National guard? Where was the Army?

The entire thing raises eyebrows.

But no, it won't be easy and it won't be cheap.

But if they do decide to try to rebuild it, they're going to have to see if it's even possible.

I bet he´ll be thrown out before his period is over.

You could always hope for it to happen.

They could impeach him on gross incompetence. I'm sure that, if another election were held today, Kerry would get 75% of the vote over Bush, at LEAST. The fact is that Bush has far less than 50% of the public's approval and that alone, in a REAL democratic republic, would be grounds to remove him.

I thought Bush was an ok president...until I found out that he was just playing guitar and having a good time for himself according to that link. Why the heck would a President just even THINK about having a really good time for himself while many people are suffering!? Honestly, I think that's very selfish. Maybe he can be impeached for endangering innocent lives that need help ASAP. That is a shame for a President, who is the leader of our country. That would be very scary if there was, say, an earthquake at where I live, and the President would dance with people at somewhere far away. I would find me and everyone else nearby to be endangered by this seemingly irresponsible President.

Annie Rice lashes out.

I swear this crisis in New Orleans is barely getting better. Not to mention that Bush isn't doing a damn thing about it nor before it began. He's only worried about Iraq and the terrorists over there.
