I was going to commemorate this with a layout and gender change, but that involves work, and if I had to do that first, I would probably never get around to posting the costume. Maybe I'll just take on the character's guise next time the gender change fad rolls around. At any rate... Time required to construct costume (including screw-ups): 100 hours Time required to wrangle 2 1/2 feet of hair under a wig once we knew what to do: 2 hours Time in costume: 6 hours Having fangirls cry and hug you because you hammed it up while dressed as a favorite character who is rarely cosplayed: so hella worth it If you don't know what I've been working on for the past year...I am referring to my Zhang He costume, which was complete-looking enough to bring to Otakon 2005. I made the outfit and props, and I had the wig commissioned by someone who knows the craft far better than myself. My husband was going to be Xiahou Dun along with me, but I could not finish his costume in time, so he'll wear it to another con instead. I'm not entirely happy with my armor (keeps riding up, needs shoulder pieces) and boots (utter last-minute "anything will do" purchase made when my more accurate white ones asploded), so I'll fix those up as well. I wrote a bunch of quick construction notes in my costume page. I would like to write up more detailed info later, but for now, if you have any specific questions on how I made stuff, feel free to ask. In my point of view, sharing is caring. |

Erm... suffice it to say that the character ITSELF is pretty effeminate, Trapster.

Before one of your prior cosplay threads, I really had no idea what it was. But it looks very fun, and in this your costume looks great. Hopefully you'll get a pic of you and your husband in your costumes when they're both done, I bet it will look great.

Thanks so much for the compliments! I had an absolute blast in costume too (and not just because of the fangirls ) It feels amazing when somebody with an excellent costume goes up to you and tells you you look fantastic...and it's just plain fun to pretend you're an extremely vain and effeminate man. Well, to me it is. Yeah. At the end of the day, I had discomfort in my right shoulder and the side of my neck and my feet were pinched from all that walking in platform heels, but it was so hella worth it. I was also quite flattered when somebody asked if that was my hair. I was afraid that because I'm a natural strawberry blonde, my coloring wouldn't quite work with jet black hair, but evidently if you're as white as I am, you can look good in a wide variety of hair colors. All I had to do was darken my eyebrows with a brow pencil and wear some sheer foundation (THE palest shade in Revlon's line, nonetheless) to cover up my yellow freckles, and the hair looked surprisingly natural. (Incidentally, I tried on my friend's medium-dark brown Yuna wig a while ago, and it worked for me, too.) Trapster - The title of the thread is a line of a song from West Side Story, a musical that's pretty well-known in the US. As Colleen mentioned, Zhang He is an effeminate fellow, and people tend to think he's gay. Hence the choice of quote. (And I was singing that at the top of my lungs more than once as well. Too bad I forgot all about the "I'm SUPER" song from the South Park movie. ) |

Curse you...Curse you so much. I'm so glad that there are no know pictures of me cosplaying as Naruto. Unlike most Cosplayers I have the long blonde hair to mess up and the vibrant blue eyes to look crazy with Oh, and Rydain. That costume is so cool. How well did a Dynasty Warriors cosplay go? Generally I've seen them folk at the conventions shun everyone who is not either from an anime or an obscure RPG or Final Fantasy (whatever the fuck is trendy on 4chan at the time). |

I think you can post whatever you want on 4chan and they´ll still like it. You haven´t thought of another project already, Rydain? |

Oops...I realized I forgot to reply. Sorry about that! Ziff - I got a metric fuckload of compliments, including some along the lines of "I have no idea what that is, but it looks great". Plus, Otakon has such a wide variety of costuming that Dynasty Warriors stuff isn't considered to be that far out. You'll see people wearing fashion popular in Japan (generally elegant gothic Lolita attire) and even costumes from web media (there was a Cheat last year). As long as the costume is good and/or people recognize the character, you'll get some sort of positive attention. I've never seen anybody get outright shunned. I see "ZOMG not another Rinoa" stuff online from people sick of seeing extremely popular cosplay, but that's really about it. Trapster - After I finish the new improved armor and boots and the rest of Randy's Xiahou Dun costume, I would like to work on a FFX-2 thief Rikku and a Dynasty Warriors 5 Zhu Rong. I'm also going to make a Dynasty Warriors 4 Sun Quan for my friend Josh as an extremely long-term project. Without his help, I wouldn't have been able to make authentic metal and leather armor and a nifty fiberglass scimitar for Xiahou Dun, so it's my way of returning a favor and getting some more sewing experience at the same time. Bella - It's lots of fun! Some people do make their own outfits, but others buy them. In Japan, there are cosplay shops that sell costumes. In the US, you pretty much have to find a commissioner or see if you can buy a costume from someone. If the costume you want to make is simple, you may be able to piece it together from store-bought clothing, too. |

Colleen: I probably wouldn't read into Zhang He that much. Koei and/or Omega Force did overdo some elements of DW and SW. --Dynasty Warriors-- Lu Bu: Pretty much a killing machine like always, although I'm surprised that the beer consumption hasn't been brought in yet. Sima Yi: He never used a fan like the games make him out to. He used a sword. Zhuge Liang is the only fan wielder. Liu Bei: The only warrior of the era to wield two swords, yet, in the games doesn't. Zhang He: Beauty is everything to him....literally. Even the oh-so-graceful moves he does in the games. Slide step, slide step, slide step *interrupted by massive sword slashes* --Samurai Warriors-- Keiji Maeda: Overdone to be pretty much an apathetic, overpowering bad ass. He's way more passive than that. Not nearly as ignorant or idiotic as the game makes him appear to be either. Shingen Takeda: The only warrior in the planet that would rather wield a fan, and not draw the sword sitting on his belt. Kunoichi: Use her musou... "I do love this game." WTF?! Not to mention she acts like a total ditz and airhead. Rydain: I fear what you would look like if you looked like Koei's model of Zhang He... *shudders* --Edit-- You already posted a link... *braces for impact* Could've been worse... You got the details down pretty well, so I get more praise for a job well done on the costume. The character....wouldn't have been my first choice. Seeing those brought back haunting memories of Adult Swim's cosplay commercial... (edited by Lenophis on 09-07-05 03:41 AM) |
