Well... it doesn't seem to work under Linux. It's a Sony PSYC Network Walkman NW-E103. Is there anything I can do about the proprietaryness?

A Sony?! Proprietary? oh surely you jest!

There's a possibility that there will be a way to get around it, although I don't know off the top of my head. I'd suggest a good google search to see what you can find. Although it depends really if anybody's reverse-engineered Sony's proprietariness to the point of making it work in Linux.

I could've told you without looking it up that it'd be proprietary.

Asking if a Sony product will use properietary methods/protocols is like asking "Is the Pope a Catholic?".

Bingo. Memory Stick in particular sticks in my mind... when we have SD and Compact Flash... why... WHY did they need to create a new thing?

Well, yeah just about the only thing you can do is search to see if someone else has used it successfully. If not, then you can try. (hey, the iPod uses a proprietary system to store the music database, it didn't stop a million other management programs from appearing)
