Yeah, it's been whined about in the past; post layouts with scrollbars. Because from what I've seen, all that's been said by the people that don't like them, is pretty much "they suck". After Kasumi closed this thread yesterday I feel like giving my 2 cents.

Kasumi, in your last and closing posts in that thread you're pretty much claiming nobody dislikes your layout. Well, I do, I hate it, and mainly because you're affected with the stupid scrollbar layout hype. ErkDog once gave one of his arguments why he doesn't like scrollbar layouts, and that was that he had so scroll per post sepparately sometimes to read it. That IS a bit annoying indeed, but what's even more annoying is that all these scrollbar layouts are so horribly huge.

Really, if you want to use scrollbars SO much, then please DON'T make such a layout that has to be 500 pixels in height just to make it fit. Heck, I'm using a 1280 x 1024 resolution and Kasumi's layout takes up half of my screen. What's absurd is that that layout is so huge just for her posts which are usually about 3 lines only, resulting in that huge, empty box in her layout. Having to scroll over that same huge and barely-filled up layout sometimes 5 times per thread gets really annoying, real fast.

You people know what scrollbar overflow <div>s are for? They are for keeping a lot of content, for example a huge chunk of text, in a small compact 'box'. The majority of the scrollbar post layouts I see here are huge, but RARELY exceed their size when it comes to text content (IE the actual post text); only resulting in huge but especially UNFILLED post layouts.

Why not just make a STRETCHABLE layout instead of a huge and ugly box with a preset width and height? If you make your layout flexible and stretchable, not only only you have this unfilled layout if you make a short post (and most posts are pretty short, I have yet to come accross the first person on this board making only very long posts with sense), but you can keep it as small as possible, and it'll only be big when it needs to.

Not only it's advantageous for the size, but we won't have to look at the same layout images every and every single time your posts come by in a thread. Seriously, as much as I like Kasumi's licking catgirls (or whatever they're supposed to be) or Anya's Tidus and Yuna pic, I really DON'T want to see these huge images a ton of times per thread page I look at.

Kasumi, don't get me wrong for using you as an example in most cases in this thread, but your layout is simply huge and that's why it's pissing me off even more than the other scrollbar layouts.

Just my 2 cents.

The size hasn't bothered me much, unless they're so small that you have to scroll everytime they write more than 10 lines.

The scrolling inside a post is definately the most annoying part of them. Although, I haven't seen any of that lately.

Large sized layouts isn't a good thing either, but Kasumi's hasn't bothered me any, though.

But the bottom line is that, I too, would prefer layouts to be compact and stretchable.

Scrollbar layouts do tend to be annoying espeacialy when the user writes big paragraphs.they can be bothersome espacaily when there is a staff member involed.

What does that have to do with anything? Can't you just stay on topic and make an actual useful post for just ONCE?

Most of the scrollbar layouts do tend to take up your whole page. Which can get quite annoying.

Depends on the situation most posts arent a mile long are they? And the set height and width of a scroll box makes you have to scroll more because its set height of such a small amount of text.

But I don't want the thread to get closed so fast, don't purposely try to get it off-topic or full of flaming

Well, here's what I think of the scrolling layouts ...
- They were cool the first time because it was new, I forgot who had it first here (Jesper?) but I remember it was a good layout ...

- Now, well ... either they're too big (which for me is when it doesn't fit in 800x600 or is more than 400 pixels high), or they're going to scroll rather often ... I don't think it's just me, but scrolling down a small box (away from the rest of the page) just to read a longer post gets really annoying ... it's even worse if the post starts with a quote that won't even fit completely

- Another thing I didn't like (but was more of a problem last summer) was when people used the "chroma" filter to get transparent scrollbars, sometimes even invisible (also bad) ... that caused problems with the ClearType effect in Windows XP (which made text hard to read on light backgrounds) ...

There's still the few that are actually decent or at least look good, and there's quite a few non-scrolling layouts that also annoy me (mostly by their size), sometimes a non-loading .css can be even worse ... but if you don't absolutely need scrolling, don't use it And if you do, see if you can make the layout scretchable instead, or use a different one ...

Honestly, I don't think they're worth it. I don't want to have to scroll down just to read 2 lines of text.

Then again, I never really saw it much enough to be really annoyed by it.

The flipside to that argument Tuvai are the scrollbar layouts that are very small, which results in having to scroll for all posts that user makes over like 3 lines, which makes reading the post quickly or at a glance pretty much impossible, which irks me more than having to scroll past a large set height. But either way, stretchable layouts are the way to go, I think.

I don'T like these scrollbars too .. especially some basic layouts without scrollbars already make trouble in Mozilla and Firefox, and just for these layouts I don't want to disable them or use that swiss-cheese-like IE instead
You have to scroll fast, and if you want to compare something to a post from a longer post in a fixed textbox, you need to scroll and scroll/move the mouse wheel up and down; doing that in larger amounts or in longer threads this sucks
On the other hand I don't hate anyone for having scrollbars in his/her layout; as long this box does not have a size like 50 x 50 pixel or something else

How about just a scrollbar for the signatures? So you have the option to view it instead of having to read the whole message to understand the post (sometimes my signature is rather long). That would be fine with me.

True, but I see that happening with more things here.

For one, the male/female account switching. The femanisation was fun and most of all original the first time, but then some other people think they'll be cool for restarting it over and over again, resulting in the fact that femanisation is becoming nothing but a stupid repetative and annoying hype.

Finally, someone who agrees with me. It wa sfunny the first time it happened. The next 378126805764780623046023 times were just annoying. Especially since they started happening every few months, and people would keep their gender-alterated names for months and months.

I'm glad you brought that up Tuvai.

I'm so sick of these stupid ass "sex changes". It wasn't even amusing in the first place.

Spoiler:
Just because your name is a different color doesn't mean you changed your gender. Want proof? Don't make me take screenshots...

If your name is blue, I'm going to refer to you as "him" and if you're name is pink then I'm going to refer to you as "her". Don't get all pissy at me either. I can't count the number of times I've mistaken a user for a female when it's quite the opposite.

And as for scrollbars? Hate 'em. If you use scrollbars, and your post is longer than what shows up on screen, I stop reading. Period. I don't post scroll.

...and FURTHERMORE....

Can we please....PLEASE stop all this neko wafer cat stuff? Seriously, it's way out of hand and it's not even original anymore.

And quit saying "baka". I can't think of a more redundant passe' word.

One last thing, you're not Japanese so quit acting like it. (Unless of course, you are Japanese which in that case ignore that last comment. Oh, and I mean Japanese. Not 1/64th Japanese either. That doesn't fucking count. 1/2? Sure. 1/4? I guess so. Any less and no.)

So in conclusion, I dislike scrollbars.
