Should be a fairly self-explanatory question. Eventually, I plan on building a home theater PC, and one of the main functions will be to emulate consoles up to and including the Sega Genesis/SNES generation. (Yes, that also means starting at the beginning, too.) However, I'm not sure what OS I'd use... WinXP Media Center or a flavor of Linux. Which OS do you think would work better for this purpose? I'd also be using it as a PVR, MP3 jukebox, DVD player, and all the other things home theater PC's do, but this is my big concern.

Which OS... hmm.

I would take Linux personally. Most emulators today that are for Windows does have a Linux version to. But I don't know which of them who is better...

Emulators for Unix/Linux.

I would install Fedora core 1, it's basically Red hat. Just newer, it's in beta stage but the responses from users using it are good.

You may take into considiration that the opensource community is big in the Linux world. So you probably could use it as DVD, MP3 and PVR player.

You could try with dual-booting. But that is probably uneeded.

Dual-booting really isn't a problem. I'd go for that, or straight windows, since unfortunately there is still a lot of Win exclusivity goin' on.

i don't think platform makes a difference for emulation because if you want the best video and sound and interaction you could possibly get, then it all depends on your hardware. an OS is nothing more than a layer for you to be able to use your hardware.

so yeah, it is the hardware on your computer that will give you the best emulation experience, not the OS--or the OS isn't going to contribute much to it...

Assuming that you want to emulate consoles with good Linux emulators available, I'd definitely go with Linux. It requires less overhead to run and is generally extremely stable, and all of the software you'll need to build a Linux media center is free.

Emulation

I can tell you that the Linux versions of ZSNES, FCEU (both of which are packaged for Debian), and MAME work awesomely. Gens seems to be a very competent Genesis emulator, but I haven't played with it yet.

Media

I'm not sure what features you'd like for the mp3 jukebox, but if you're happy with Winamp 2's interface, XMMS will do the trick for you. It works nicely and l even takes Winamp skins. There are more sophisticated pieces of software available (lots of people seem to like JuK, for example), but I don't have any personal experience with them.

mplayer is utterly godly (and has no Windows equivalent - sure, there are lots of media players available, but none is a Swiss army knife like this one). I've used it to watch all sorts of videos, including DivX rips and late-version Windows Media files. It can play DVD's, too. Keep in mind that you do need a reasonably powerful system to get the best performance (I can't find official recommendation on the site, but a random article on Linux DVD playback suggests at least a 500 MHz processor).

PVR

There are a couple of different PVR software choices available for Linux (MythTV is one that I've heard of). Reportedly, they can be a royal pain in the ass to set up, but that certainly depends on your distribution and hardware setup. There are MythTV packages for Debian, which should make it reasonably straightforward to get it set up on that distro. In any case, I'd suggest doing lots of research into Linux PVR's before building this box. This will allow you to select hardware that will work well with your chosen software. Sorry I don't have much firsthand knowledge here, but we have a TiVo, and it works for us, so we've never played around with the free equivalents.

On the Windows end of things, there's SageTV, but you have to pay for it.
