Ok. This thread is to talk about misconceptions about your state or provence. The idea is to name you state, and then talk about what things people think about your state are untrue. If you live in the US or Canada, use your state or provence. If you live in another country, please use your country as a whole. This is because most countries are smaller than US states / Canadian provences. So first for me: Connecticut: 1: Everyone in Connecticut is a rich millionare. Totally false, we have just as many rednecks and hillbillies as any other states. They're just more.... northern. 2: Connecticut is a "blue state". Connecticut tends to vote Democratic on presidential elections. The governer, one senator, and a few of the house representatives are Republican. 3: Connecticut produces bad drivers. This is wrong, you're thinking of Massachusetts. |

All dutch peeps wear clogs and export tulips, and we have a strange preoccupation with windmills and soccer. 75% false. Only oldschool farmers wear clogs, we export many things, last couple mills I've seen recently were green power mills and I'm ashamed to admit a certain national liking for soccer that I don't have. |

-Everyone in California is obese, lazy, and rich, or stupid and obsessed with surfing, totally chill dude. -OC is all stupid drama, it's just like that show. No. I don't surf, neither do any of my friends. I don't talk like my IQ is below 20, and I can't think of anyone right now that does. Most people I know, including my mom, are not wealthy. Nor are they obese.. but my dad throws off statistics a bit. Furthermore, the OC is not all drama. It only is if you watch The OC on television. It's not reality tv, believe it or not. >8( |

Massachusetts: Can only think of one major one really...they'll assume, "Most people here are gay now, beause of the law allowing them to marry". Not true. They assume people come down here from other states to get married and don't leave, and that causes an overwhelming gay population by their standards. Couldn't be further from the truth, really. We've just as much as any other bordering New England state. |

Tennessee: All Tennesseans are rednecks or hillbillies: Pretty untrue. I know very few and there are actually many intellectuals here. Tennessee is a backward state with little relevance to the national and global economies: Very untrue. FedEx is based in Memphis and Memphis Int'l Airport has more cargo go through it than any other airport in the world (including airports like Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Dusseldorf, New York, Los Angeles, etc.). Tennessee is also a major central area. Tennessee has little relevance to national politics: Untrue. Bill Frist, one of our senators, is the majority leader in the Senate. Lamar Alexander, our other senator, was an actor. Harold Ford, Jr., a U.S. Representative from a Memphis district, also made a attempt recently to become the House minority leader. Tennessee is a red state: Untrue. We were red in the presidential election 2004, but our governor is Democrat and our legislature is controlled by the Democrats. Also: Memphis has more hospitals in it than any other city in the world. Albert Gore, Sr., (the former veep's father) rose to power in defiance of E.H. Crump, a former political boss in Memphis. |

Country: Norway - There are polar bears on the Norwegian mainland. No, that's false. Svalbard has polar bears, though. - We're all barbarians that feast on whale meat. (Or something like that..) I wouldn't say we're barbarians, but there are people (like me) that eat, and enjoy it, just like any other type of food.. And it's probably not as cold as you think it is either. Anyway, I'm not that good on misconceptions others might have about us, so.. yeah. |

I have a canadian friend and he says EH some of the time, anyways. NorCal (cause anyone who knows knows that northern and southern california might as well be seperate states). -We're all crazy liberals Amazingly enough, there are some intensely right wing people up here, but for the most part, especilly berkely, we are so far left it scares most moderate democrats. -Everyone smokes weed Not so much, enough do but not nearly as many as you would think -Everyone in SF is gay Again, not true, but usually people in SF are much more accepting of homosexual lifestyles than any other part of the region, which is a good thing in my book. |

Chile: They always show Chile as a country of natives, aboriginals, indians, not civilized people. FALSE. There are only small areas where there are a few of them, 86% of the population lives in urban areas, 14% in rural areas, and from that 14% only a few of them are natives. Most cases of this misconceptions are in tv cartoons (i remember a case in an episode of Captain Planet ) What is truth is that Chile is not well known. Only references to famous chilean people would clarify where it's located. i.e: Ivan Zamorano, a soccer player that played in Real Madrid (1993-94) then in Inter de Milan and then in America of Mexico. Two tennis players, Nicolas Massu and Fernando Gonzalez which won the gold medal in Tennis Doubles and the first guy won also gold medal in Tennis Singles in Athens 2004 |

Well, since Southern California (where I am now) is covered, and the bay area part of Northern California, I'll cover the specific (Stockton) part of California where I used to live. The surrounding cities had an impression of it, at least.... •We live here because we want to -actually, most people live there so they can work in the bay area (100 mile a day commute, smart people..) or have family that works in the bay area •Caucasians are a staggering minority -Wait, yeah.. that's true •The education is among the worst in the country -Only if it's public, the private schools is be gud I heared •The city is overrun with gangs and drug addicts -Just the Southern part, the rest is only speckled with druggies and thugs •The delta is polluted and undrinkable -It's that debris-free kind of pollution, we just have chemicals, exhaust, and unhealthy levels of bacteria! Fridges and tires are kept to a minimum. |

The UK seems to be famous for bad food in the US. We have plenty very delicious delicacies if people are willing to look. Fish and Chips seems to be the most famous, but my favorite that is famous for coming from a specific place in the UK is definately the Bakewell Tart Also, a lot of british people find it funny how many people from America think that Yorkshire Pudding is served as desert (edited by Kasumi-Astra on 08-24-05 03:35 PM) |

Originally posted by The Guru of Furu I live in Nor Cali too. When I meet someone..(the wannabe gansta's) they ask if I smoke..and no I do not. In Cali, my part I know no surfers but I have heard some girls talk like on Clueless (and that's my experience this first week in college) because in HS I didn't know anyone like that..our school was..different . Sacramento Misconceptions There's cows where you go Umm..no, only near the Elk Grove area and other non-developed areas on the outskirts. We all own cow bells. The people that go to the Kings games take them for show..haha. People say my part of town is ghetto. To a certain extent..yes..but I heard many things about Richmond, California in the bay area and you can't compare anything to that. Murders, drug dealers, everything..so bad. I'd hate to live there, I can tolerate where I live. Sac city unified schools suck. They sure do. Elk Grove unified is hot. |

Er... don't really know any for Washington state... let me think... It is always raining in Seattle - Sadly, that's false. Actually, I don't think I've ever been there once and had it rain... it's very sunny there. Still pretty chilly, though. Everyone drinks coffee... or something. - That one might be true. There are a lot of coffee shops everywhere, but after a while, you just stop noticing them. Meh. |

- Kansas is absolutely nothing but plains. Hang on ... just gotta get out my hysterical laughter out. *clears throat* So false I can't even begin to think of a powerful word to explain it's level of fKitten Yiffer. Olathe, is the 2nd highest Blue Ribbon School in the United States. Whatever that specifically means, I'm unsure of, but I'm sure that's saying soemthing. Our schools are some of the best in the US. (I mean heck, I go to a school that has a 2 hour Game Design class, in High School. That should say something). And Olathe (my city) is crazy, huge, flourishing, fresh (as in way new, and better to live in than say Kansas City which is older and run down), etc, etc, etc. I'm completely serious about all of this. Yes, it is VERY true that Western Kansas is, pretty much made up of plains, small cities, and so on, but over in my area, Eastern Kansas, there's no plain, farm, whatever, in SITE. East KS is made up of huge cities and County's. But seriously, you wouldn't believe how many people have insisted that I go out and have fun out in the plains (People that I've spoken to on AIM, and eventually told them where I reside, always ask and make fun). It's pretty sad. - Kansas has weird weather. Very true, it's a place where you could get rained on, and your friend 20 feet in front of you won't. The way the rain acts around here is very odd.
