| Let's not forget about the super-bugs being bred daily within our prison system. Let's not forget about due to our neglect of the poor, we have super-bugs and TB outbreaks on the streets of all major cities. Let's not forget that due to a lack of medical help in Africa we have no damn clue about what is going on with virus and bacteria mutations there. The simple fact is that we're going to be killed because, not due to capitalism, but because of greedy bastards not knowing how to spread world wealth in a way that could curtail disease. I mean, the UN has the WHO which does the world a damn big favour. Let's not forget that these same greedy bastards prefer war and Micheal Bolton to common sense. Let's not forget about the growth of Ft. Detrick in Maryland to increase bio-weapons capabilities of the US. The increase of spending in "military biology" in Russia and China. Wow. People worry about an atomic holocaust. What's going to fuck us over hard is going to be smaller than a pin head. |

| The worry is that the virus will mutate to allow human to human contraction. If bird-flu were to become as easily contractible as standard flu, then it would be a disaster. AIDS, relatively, is not that easy to contract. (edited by Kasumi-Astra on 08-20-05 05:09 PM) |

| Unlike AIDS though, 75-95% of otherwise healthy people who contract the bird flu do not die (especially if they get the proper medical attention). If you get AIDS, it will kill you. Not the case with bird flu. Just thought I'd like to point that out. But yes, TB is scary, and I'd worry about the new super-strains of it before I'd worry about the bird flu. |

| With prior pandemics, at least in the last century, the second wave which usually happens a few months after the first wave, tends to be the worst one. With that being said, if the vacine for H5N1 isn't available for several months it could be pretty useful granted that history repeats itself as there would be a vaccine and it would be useable on the human population. | |||

| Apophis: I'm aware of that point but I'm just saying that in the event the vaccine works *OR* in the event that the common flu just has a really... productive year, so to speak... we're prepared for it in any event. The elderly are usually the ones you need to watch out for with the flu anyways, which is why the government here makes sure they get their flu shots each year. |

| Personally, I'm not concerned about it (at least not for myself). I haven't had the flu in at least 6 years. I'm a little more worried about my grandma, but she hasn't even stepped outside since November of '04. That shouldn't be a problem, but you never know. I'd be a little more worried about a friend of mine, who just because a father this past weekend. And given the trend, the flu will hit hard this year just as it has the past 3 or 4 years. I don't know about the rest of the world, but I seem to recall the US getting hit pretty damn hard with the flu, and being massively short on vaccine to counter it. It's simple, avoid public contact if you can help it. Wash your damn hands. It's worked for me. |
