ATI>NVIDIA. ATI is so much better, not only that I have an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, but I like it better. They're more reliable than NVIDIA, but that`s just my opinion. |

As far as I can remember, our old computer had a 16Mb 3DFX video card. I don't know if that's the exact type though, as that computer died (I'm still not sure what part of it failed though) back at the beginning of March Break in 2004. I wasn't the best, I know, but it still worked for the things I needed it to do My new computer has an 128Mb NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (so the same as Keikonium's, in other words), which, although it's now not the best you can get, serves me quite well. I have a feeling that I'm going to be sticking with that one until my current computer refuses to work, as I don't have the money to go out and buy a new graphics card right now As I said though, it works for what I need it for, and that's really what matters Edit: I didn't see the poll at first, but I can't really answer anyways, as I don't know which cards are the best. I'm tempted to say "NVIDIA", but if I did, it would be for the sole reason that I have a graphics card manufactured by them right now. (edited by Karadur on 08-18-05 12:26 PM) |

I have an ATi Radeon X800XL right now. I had a GeForce4 Ti4400 before. I always had nVidia cards, this is my first ATi. After quite a hassle with the drivers at first, I had to format and reinstall Windows to get it to work right. Even then, it still would give me problems every now and then. Once the newer drivers came out, I didn't have that problem anymore. My system is very stable. Having said that, I think I'll switch back to nVidia next time. I don't like ATI's control panel for the driver settings as much as nVidia's. I can't overclock the card with stock drivers without a 3rd party utility. I haven't even tried to overclock it because of this. I don't know how much more performance I could get out of it (probably a lot, which I don't really need right now). nVidia's drivers are better IMO. This card is physically larger than even my Ti4400 was (in other words, huge). The PCI-E to AGP bridge chip on it gets quite hot, but has no heatsink. The FX5200 isn't a graphics card really, just a flashy video card. There used to be a difference, but they're all just called video cards anymore. I don't buy cards with low graphic performance. The 5200 is worse than a Ti4400, by FAR, which I replaced because it blew out, but was going to replace anyway because it was too slow. |

I have a cheap GeForce MX4000. It servers me well, since I don't play except old games and I'm using emulators for NES, SNES and PSX. A weird thing is newer drivers, which cause Zelda OoT to mess up (floor texture in Hyrule Field and other loactions is flickering or missing), but using the original drivers supplied from the install-CD, everything works fine. |

I recently bought a new Radeon x800 with my new computer I just built. It was working beautifully after I installed the latest catalyst drivers from ati.com while playing the HL2 demo. However, when I tried playing Counter Strike, I got bluescreened. I have tried many times reinstalling drivers, even using the catalyst maintenance utility(found online) to wipe off all traces before reinstalling. This is the message I get while sending an error report. (Could this have ANYTHING to do with the fact that I didn't update windows yet?) It might, but even if not, you should always update. Otherwise you have dozens of security holes waiting to be infected.

I think the drivers SAY you NEED SP1 minimum and suggest SP2 for full compatibility. I don't remember if that's ATi's, nVidia's, or both companys' drivers.

Yea I did download SP2 and I also tried earlier versions of the driver(using the whole driver cleaner thing) and it still didn't work. It's weird because the only two that have had that sort of error are the unreal tournament 2004 demo and steam apps. (except hl2 demo) I've also tried the workaround provided by microsoft and get this message on startup. (edited by Jin Dogan on 08-19-05 11:22 PM) |

Well, I'm currently using an ATI video card and I find it to be fine. Previously I used to use nVidia cards, and I had no problem with them either -- but that said, I never bought an nVidia card so much as... an MSI card with an nVidia chipset.

I bought a 128MB Geforce 6600GT over the summer for $120. A big upgrade from my 64MB Geforce2 MX400... I've always preferred nVidia cards although I've heard some ATi cards to outperform nVidia... |
