Well, I'm a big supporter of this pullout, and I've been following what's been going on with the settlers quite closely in the media over the last months. I'm afraid things might go bad, though. Already, people have started setting fires to their homes, apparantly because they don't want the Palestinians to use the houses once they've moved. I'm afraid things might go really bad, as I saw an interview with two nationalist Israeli women a few weeks ago that said they'd do anything to fight the pullout, and that they were certain they were going to "win". Well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I, too, have a bad feeling that this isn't going to be the most peaceful pullout. I do hope it goes as well as it possibly can though. It's fascinating, history in the making right here and we're alive to witness it.

Yeah, history in action is very interesting...

one question I have though is...for those who are resisting, why don't the Israeli government just abandon them to put it bluntly?

That´s gonna be interesting, huh? It has been interesting for 10-20 years if you´re talking about the violence. If not longer.

Yeah, I heard about this on the Radio. They think that God has told them to populate that area. That´s it´s some kind of a mission.

Militarised suburbia is a scary and weird thing, these settlements are colonialism that was designed to create Facts On The Ground and make compromise impossible. That's why they're all populated mostly by nationalist psychos and religious zealots.

Hopefully Sharon's doing this as a dry run for the main event - a West Bank withdrawal.

Well, a viable PALESTINIAN state will never exist. It will be sucked into one of the larger Arab states. Gaza will probably cede itself to Egypt.

The crazy thing is that it isn't Palestinians atacking Israeli soldiers...It is whacky Israelis that are attacking everyone.

Anyone with a memory or historical background that stretches back to Meir Kahane, the Kach Party, the plot to blow up the Dome of the Rock, the Hebron Massacre and Yigal Shamir killing Yitzakh Rabin shouldn't be surprised by that.

Historic? It certainly could be, assuming all goes peacefully. However, something tells me this won't end well, if it even ends at all.

Jan-Erik Smilden wrote a commentary in Dagbladet (Norway's third largest newspaper), titled The lie about Gaza (Bløffen om Gaza). I found it interesting, so I thought I'd translate it...

Pictures of Jewish settlers being thrown out of their homes in Gaza are now being sent around the world. Those throwing them out are Israeli soldiers. The most extreme settlers claim they've been betrayed, and that prime minister Ariel Sharon has agreed to make Gaza "clean from Jews".

The fact is, though, that Gaza has been occupied by Israel since the six-days-war in 1967. Prime minister Ariel Sharon hasn't done anything that the UN security council hasn't demanded since then. And, unfortunately, there's little reason to believe the peace process will make any progress. The oposite might happen.

USA has been pressuring Sharon to make him abandon the 21 settlements in Gaza. For Israel, it has also been an economic and military-wise burden to protect the 9000 Israeli settlers living among the 1.4 million Palestinians. Unlike the West Bank, Gaza doesn't hold any religious meaning to the Jews. Most Israelis have seen the 380 sq.km. area on the border to Egypt as a pain and a burden.

We should believe Ariel Sharon when he says it's "painful" to leave Gaza. Israel's prime minister has principally not been interested in losing a single sq.m. of occupied territory, neither in the West Bank, in Gaza, or at the Golan Heights. He has a decisive point when he says that Israel cannot keep Gaza because the Palestinian growth in the area is too big. Inside Israel's recognized borders, 5.2 million Jews and 1 million Palestinians live. A total of 3.5 million Palestinians live on the West Bank and Gaza. If the Israelis hadn't pulled out now, the Palestinians would have been a majority inside Israel and the occupied territories soon.

Now, Sharon might have bought himself a few extra years. There is unfortunately little reason to believe that there will be any large-scale pull out of the West Bank after what has happened in Gaza. Sharon has been so kind that he these days also pulls out of 4 small settlements in the northern part of the West Bank. Together with the 21 settlements in Gaza, this means Israel is pulling out 4% of the total number of Jewish settlers. In other words, 96% stay where they are, illegally, according to international law.

Even though the Palestinians in Israel are celebrating the removal of their occupants, is the mood in the West Bank dampened. Sharon has already promised that the large settlements there shall stay Israeli forever and ever. While the peace optimists celebrate the Gaza pull out, the Israelis are expanding their settlements on the West Bank. They keep up the work on the wall and the so-called security fence that keeps the Palestinians of the West Bank out of Israel. Israel is taking more and more land from the Palestinians, claiming to do so for "security" reasons, without the World bothering to care.

And it is security that Sharon uses as an argument for his pull out of Gaza. He has done his part for now, and now it's up to Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to deal with militant groups such as Hamas and Islamic Holy War to stop all violence against Israelis. If this doesn't happen, Sharon promises to use even more violence against Palestinians than ever before.

"The New Gaza" is an area where 1.4 million Palestinians will practically be locked in. The Israelis control the sea outside of and the air above the small Palestinian enclave, which is also one of the world's most miserable and poverty-stricken areas. For now, Isreali soldiers are also standing lined up along the Egyptian border. Did anyone say anything about peace?
