I accidently turned on the tileset specific Layer 3 option on a level with a tileset which, according to LM, should be a garbage layer. What I got was this:

An unused Layer 3 image (with the original tiles removed), which reminds me of the cage Peach sat in in SMB/SMBTLL. Could this be a rest from an old ending where you rescue Peach from a cage instead of her falling out from Bowser's clown car?

The "cage" is used in all tilesets not mentioned in the Modify Other Properties window in LM. (Note that tileset 6's image is transculent and scrolls, just like tileset E's.)

I have wondered about that myself for a long time... the bars looks like it belongs to some sort of cage, but alas, I have no clue, but I bet FuSoYa, or someone else may have an answer to this.

I saw this before, but never noticed that it could be a cage. You may be able to fix that tileset by hex editing or doing a quick trace on it.

That'd be stupid. Smallhacker has a program that would probably be better at finding this data and repointing the tiles if you're talking about that, and if you're talking about changing the graphics themelves you can do that with just a tile editor and LM.

Edit: At the cost of whatever else uses those tiles, of course...

Not quite, with some inventive coding. Find out which tiles are referenced, then copy over the GFX file that has those Layer 3 tiles. Edit the correct tiles, and then make a custom block that loads up the new tiles over the regular ones for that level only.

OMG, Smallhacker. You rock so hard. This discovery is ten kinds of awesome.

Using my l33t art skillz, I have reconstructed a tileset for the cage. Of course, not knowing what the original looked like, it's entirely guesswork...but at least it gives you a better idea of how the tiles were laid out and mirrored:

BMF: It's really hard to know if the first part of the post was sarcasm or not... Nice picture, though.

I searched for beta pictures from SMW, just in case someone would have a picture of the "cage" for some reason. I didn't find anything, but I found some other interesting things.

Beta (and much more w00t) overworld. This seems to be a beta of Donut Plains. Note the coin and score counter, the lack of level names and the beta Mario (from the SNES test rom) in the upper left corner.

Beta level. Old fire flower from test rom, SMB3 wooden block, squared ? box, lack of bonus stars. (Lack of Yoshi coins?)

Different floor

Different Koopa, level uses the unused Layer 2+Transparency level mode.

Much more funky.

Sarcasm? Hardly. I had no idea this was in the game. You know how much I love hidden/unused stuff.

I've seen those pictures before. Very w00t indeed. It's amazing that none of the levels shown made it into the final game (though I guess I can understand why the transparent water idea was dropped, it looks pretty blah without a background)...

I wish someone came up with a ROM of the beta version. That would be so nice! But I guess it's not going to happen...

Yep, I also knew about this. I also edited the graphics to make it look more like a cage. Looks nothing like BMF's amazing work tho lol.

I love that beta overworld. I have had that shot in my photobucket album for months. Never seen beta levels tho!

I want a beta rom!!!

I think what happened is that at one point Nintendo was going to make SMW a lot more like SMB3 but then they decided to make SMW what it is now and to make Mario Allstars instead.

I had a theory about this as well. When you beat a castle there is an animation of you beating the castle and the egg thanking you, and then text at the bottom. I thought that this would be used as a cutscene thing, have peach inside of the cage, and then have text come up saying "Mario Please Help!!!" or something.

Unless you're willing to break into Nintendo of Japan's headquarters and raid their vault without getting caught, you're probably never going to see this version in ROM form. It may not even exist anymore.

Heck, we're extremely lucky to have the few prototype tiles that we do (extracted from the test ROM)...

On the subject of things that were removed from the game, I found this a while back:

Nothing too impressive, but there used to be a little dust animation when getting on yoshi. To see this in game change ROM 0x10DB4 from B8 to B9.
