I might have the cash to shoot up for one soon, but I was wondering what opinions were in terms of internal hard drives. I'm keeping the horizons broad, so I basically would want to know the capacity/model/brand etc. for what you would go for if you had the money to buy whatever. I'd like to keep it under $150 USD if I could though; it'll be used as a secondary to the MAXTOR 60GB that I've had in here for a few years.

So basically, I'm just browsing opinions. Any insights?

Well, I (and Melvin) used this 80G Maxtor drive for a while (he used it for pron/anime ) and it's served us well (currently runs W2k for me).

I've never had any problems with it, and it was 100$ when I bought it a few years ago

Outpost has a 200GB Maxtor drive for $69. I don't know how reliable that place is, I have never bought anything from there myself, but it's worth checking out.

EDIT: Hyperlinks are not supposed to have colons in main address body... use %3A.

Hard drives are CHEAP now, Hiryuu. I think you could easily get a Maxtor 160GB drive for under $150 American, but odds are you'll need to hit up a non-chain store for that price.

Took a look at them...

Neo: Was this - (http://shop1.outpost.com/product/3492233?site=sa:Hard%20Drives%20Memorypot5) [urls are nuts with a colon] 200GB from MAXTOR the one that you were speaking of? Looks to be 70 bucks, not 80.

yeah, it is...it is $80 if you buy it from the store...so it adds up to be the same after shipping since you are buying online, i guess

Works for me; that's about what I spent on this 60 gig when I bought it a few years ago. But having 260 gigs on a 1.0GHz is almost going to feel like a waste for that speed...oh well.

Look into a processor/motherboard upgrade next?

Might as well get the extra space anyways if it's that cheap so you don't have to do as much CD burning... or you could grab a DVD burner and the drive for less than $150 and do that.

Is this a case of "read the thread before replying"? Hint: I linked that exact object. See third reply in this thread.

And to post something kinda on topic, I actually didn't know hard drives were this cheap nowadays. I remember back in the days when a 1gb disc cost that much. Yep, those were the days.

On this piece of shit Compaq? I'd be better off just buying a new system. The system's far and away dated.

And I would grab a DVD burner, but last I check, most required a 1.2GHz to run.

@trapster -- this is the first time I've ever heard of chipset compatibility problems with HDs i'd like to see where you got this information. Probably, what I think happened was someone had that hard drive and did some type of customization that caused the HD to be fried... Hiryuu doesn't seem like the type to do super customization on his own computer...

My HD preferences are Western Digital, Seagate, and then Maxtor. However, if quantum was still around, then Quantum would be ahead of Maxtor...

You know, I would've been right with you on that too, because I used to use WD...but it never failed; every time I used a drive by them, it would always bite the dust a lot faster than a MAXTOR.

The hard drives that I've put in friends comps that have been MAXTORs have worked much better in terms of longevity than WDs did for me, some of the MAXTORs are still being used today that I put in more than a half-decade ago.

As for Seagate: heard a lot, never used them. And you'd be right about super customization if I'm using an old Shitpaq. I just don't have the cash. :\

None of my friends have ever had specific problems with specific drives... Guess it's a crapshoot really. Go with what works with you or what fits your price range.

Seagate are supposed to be all right but I don't think any of them fit my price range a year ago... therefore I don't care about them.

I don't care who wrote it or what language they wrote it in. It's patently untrue.
