I got a new computer two weeks ago, and I have a few questions:

1. The computer came with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, but MSInfo says I'm running Windows XP Professional. My Help and Support Center also says it's XP Pro. Does MCE 2005 include the functionality of XP Pro, or is it just a big mistake?

2. Both DxDiag and the System window say my computer has 896 MB of RAM, while MSInfo and the sticker on the front of the computer say I have 1 GB. Why is it saying that I only have 896?

3. Randomly, my screen will go totally white, or white with vertical yellow stripes, and nothing happens when I press anything or click the mouse. I have to turn the computer off. I'm assuming it's a graphical problem, but I don't know how the drivers could be outdated already... The card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200. Anyone know what is wrong or where I might be able to find log files that explain this?

1. According to Paul Thurrott, Windows XP Media Center Edition is just Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 (SP1) with an additional application, Media Center, and related supporting services.

2. 1024 - 896 = 128 MB, I bet you 128 is how much video ram you have. If so, you have an integrated, shared memory video card. This means your video card uses part of your overall memory for its memory needs.

3. Try using another video card if you have one lying around the house. If your ATI Radeon Xpress 200 is a built in memory card, then for the love of some divine being...get a video card.

When the screen blanks out, you might try jiggling the monitor cable, but it does sound like the video card is defective or its drivers are bad.

Problems 2 and 3 can both be solved by going to the store and buying a graphics card that doesnt suck.

A Geforce FX 6600 for example...

I'm not made of money. I got this for my birthday, where the computer had to cost $700 or less. (I was lucky to get that computer-- it was on sale from $1000 to $700) I put in all my money on that to help buy it. I have no money to buy some big expensive card.

you don't need an expensive card...a 64MB geforce2 MX400 runs around $30 nowadays (i'll sell you mine if you are willing) but anyways, you just need A video card because anything integrated sucks for games released the past 5 years. So, just keep in mind that you will need a video card in the future...
