Simeon's Gemstone Game

I bet you can't do it. No matter who goes first, he always seemes to win. If you beat him, please let me know what you did.

~EDIT~

Fixed link.

I don't think you can beat him. Once you get down to 5, you have to go, so it's obvious what he has to choose to leave 1 remaining. He always chooses opposite of what you choose to ensure it ends up that way. If you choose 1, he chooses 3, vice versa, or you both choose 2.
That's lame. You can't win.

I knew this was possible because you get the choice of who goes first and any strategy he uses in one spot, you can use against him in that same spot if you switch sides. And of course, it is possible.

HINT: Go first and pick 2.

You took 3 gemstones. There is one left.

Congratulations!!! You WON!!!

How to win:

spoiler warning, I dunno the tag

.

.

.

.

.

.
You go first, and end your turn with 21...

Next turn, end at 17. Then 13, 9, 5, 1.

Win!

I had seen this a while back in one of my classes in school...

I picked up on it instantly... after spending an entire lunch mapping out possible strategies for each way .

Still, its fun

I don't understand how can you beat that thing. I always end up with 1 at the end. I even cheat by using the back option and still lose.

Well, if you let him go first, or go first and pick anything but 2, you'll always lose. So just start first and go with 2, then...

Spoiler:
After that, whatever he picks, pick 4 - that number. Repeat. Eventually you'll win.

you can win...just a matter of making the right decisions at each step. there are few solutions you can win...that is why it is so hard.

this game reminds me of this, if it isn't it: Game of Nim

Am I like, the ONLY person who noticed that this is the same exact thing as the Doctor Topper minigame in SMRPG? I have beaten Dr. Topper a million times in that, and this was no harder than that.

EDIT: ok, slight differences. Instead of taking coins out of a chest, you are taking gemstones. And um, I guess there's colors. Big whoop. It's the same game.

I've done it.

Took awhile, but when I finally began to try and think a few moves ahead, it became easy.

I tried again.. and I fail. How far ahead can you think? It's got me cornered 5 moves before the end anyhow. And I blame you, Argos Bleak. >8(

Um, the solution's already listed below. :\

It's a tricky algorithm and I'm guessing it's one of those "there's only one solution" things.

Yeah, but Dr. Topper is a moron. Since Mario goes first, and there are 21 coins in the box with the option to take up to 4, if he had been programmed right he could kick YOUR ass every time.

Hey, that's not a bad hack idea. Change the rule to 23 coins and then no more than 3 taken, and then you choose who goes first. It'll be the EXACT SAME GAME.

But then, um, you would have to take the time to reprogram it all

Wait... so you're saying it's possible to beat SMRPG?
