I don't know of this has been asked but I didn't see it anywhere on the first page so here goes.

Me, I go with old school. Sure today's games are great like Metroid Prime or Super Mario Sunshine but they weren't as good as the old games. I miss 2D platformer games because it's hard to find these days. Mario games, the metroid games, and even the sonic games weren't as great as they used to be. Since when do you collect shine sprites or stars in Mario games? Plus the levels in SM64 and SM: Sunshine were kind of repetitive because there's 8 to 15 levels that you play about 7 to 8 times to get just about eveything minus the secret stuff. FPS for Metroid was a good idea but I miss the 2-D platformer Metroid games where enemies and bosses were hard to kill, in the Metroid Prime games they seem a lot easier. Finally Sonic games weren't ment to be 3-D games after they screwed up the camera in SA2: Battle. Sonic Heroes wasn't any better because it's far beyond what Sonic games were what they used to be.

Well that's my opinion, what is yours?

Why does it matter? There are good old games, just as there are good new games. I'm content with just that. People preferring old games because "they're just better" is nostalgia, and nothing more. Now, I'm not saying there aren't any franchises that have been run in to the ground recently but come on-ish.

I'm not going to let something like nostalgia cloud my judgment on older games, it is completely irrelevant to their quality. Everything was more fun when you were 6 years old.

I doesn't really matter what gen it is. Games can suck like ET to Superman 64.

The games in this world depend on two things:
1) Your ability as a gamer. If you suck, get better. If you don't get better...sucks to be you.
2) The game's impact on the globe. If it rules it does. If not, it gets landfilled.

That's all you really need to know.

NES, SNES, and Genesis all rock the sox out of anything of these ages. I honestly could sit at home and play my old NES all day, I could not play Gamecube all day, the games don't appeal to me as much. SNES same, and once I get a Genesis I'm sure it will be the same way.

Once I move to Omaha, I'll have access to shops that sell older games too, lot of shops that is. The only one in town is the pawn shop, and they rarely have a game I want.

The only newer system I like is the N64. And even that doesn't compare to the older stuff.

My NES is fun and all, but the games are short and too damned easy. I can get more challenge out of playing Ninja Gaiden for X-Box or maybe jacking up the difficulty on Halo 2. The both require more thinking than "A"...SHIT B B B B B B B.

The old sk00l vs today argument is perpetuated by jaded morons who really should forget how to breath.

I think that if you find a game you really enjoy, it doesn't matter which generation it is. I still play games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past for the SNES today, but I also mix it with new games such as The Sims 2.

I think one reason a lot of people think older systems have more great games is because of Emulation. It's easier to toss out the shitty games when it was FREE, plus you have easy access to a huge library of games. When you payed 50 (or 30, or 20) bucks for a game, you're a lot more disappointed if it's bad, or even mediocre.

So I voted both.

It's not the ability to move in 3-d motions, it's the fun gameplay that matters.
Who cares if it's easy? if it's fun, play it. They are both awesome.

Quoting RT-55J...

"I personally think that the mentality that "olde skool is 3410 billion times >>>> than new sk00l games" is purely fed by one thing:

Nostalgia"

Anyway, end quote.

Technically, next generation is necessarely better... TECHNICALLY, NOT IN PRATICE.

Better technologies = Better POSSIBILITIES

As such, some new gaming platforms are HUGE wastes of potential, focusing on nothing more than pretty graphics.

The argument goes both ways.

Stop whining about 3D games being shit and look at the 2D library back then.

What do you see?

The nostalgia-filled morons will say:

"Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros 3"

I see:

Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros 3, and 350000 other games that can be safely labelled as "garbage".

Even back then when scrolling the screen was seen as nothing more than a dream and that the entire game was spent over a single screen, there was such a thing as "crappy games".

Really, old-schoolers, shut up and play the new games without whining for once!

New-schoolers, go past your "dull colors" or "unrealism" phobia and play the old games, for once!

Now that this is said, I believe I can shut up and lurk in the shadows, reading the upcoming posts leave this thread at once.

If this sounds like flame to anyone, sorry for altought the tone is a bit harsh, offending people wasn't my goal.

Each has its own ups and downs. A detailed 3D environment can really blow your mind, while really good 2D games are easier to make and thus more common. It depends on genre too. 2D racing games suck, no way around it, whereas 3D shooters just aren't usually as fun as games like Super Metroid. Adventure games like Zelda are so much more fun in 3D when you can really explore and feel like you're in the game (not that the 2D Zeldas don't rock incredibly hard), but 2D adventures have their own advantages like bigger worlds and in some cases being able to defy physics. (Mario games, though not adventure, do this a lot - think Super Mario Bros 2 where you could go to the other side of space-time to pick Mushrooms, or SMB3 where you could go behind the scenery. You can't do these kinds of things in 3D.)

1. If your saying every game besides those three can safely be labeled as garbage, then I will seriously hunt you down, slit your throat and watch you bleed. Then I'll save you before you die, and do it again later. Seriously.

2. I have played newer games, I like plenty of them, but I honestly enjoy the old games better. It's just me, it's my opinion, I'm not whining about it, yeah there are some new games that were major disapointments because of the way their potential for being great wasn't used, but that's the only reason.

All I'm saying is if I had a choice to play my NES or Gamecube, 9 out of 10 times it would be my NES.

oh, for the love of... ANOTHER of these?!

A fun game is fun, new or old. SMB3 is fun. It's an old game. Knights of the Old Republic is fun. It's a new game. Goldeneye is fun. It's somewhere in the middle.

Yes, some people prefer old games. Others like new. But it's moronic to say that either is better than the other.

I agree with this guy completely. Categorizing games by how old they are is stupid.

And the same was said about music. This was in another topic.. about how people always say music was better "back then." But really, the music that you as an individual can like will always be there. It's just that people forget the bad stuff that was made in the past.

Same thing I said to myself when I saw this ...

I love videogames, yes, I have that nostaglia in me, and I can easily say my favorite systems are the NES, SNES, and Gensis, but there are still many games that are still coming out that I look forward too. Heck, need proof? I own a PS2, DC, GCN, and an Xbox. So yeah, obviously I play all of the new systems, and will probably continue to do so until my end.

I do see more value in older games though. But yeah, I'm not really going to vote on this. I just love videogames all around.

You know what would be the shit? If a console was relesed that was only ment for 2D games. And with technology these days, the games length capabilities could go on for days because they are 2D and therefor SMALL. This would rock, because Im sure Nintendo and alll those third partys like Sega( I still want them back as system developers ) and others would pump out games and it would be awsome!

I like older games because they arent complex and they are what set the standard. Nothing was ever repetitive or boring. They were always new and usually improved from older releases. Nowadays, everything is eather "Stolen Idea" or "Same damn thing" , like everyone trying to make games that are like Half Life 2 or even run off its engine (Supposed Metroid Prime 3 rumor is that it will mimick HL2's engine. Such bullshit....).

Very true. If it wasn't for emulation, I would have completely missed out on the Super NES and NES era.
