I was hanging out at a friends house last night and it was raining. I was in the front yard walking towards my car, and then lightning struck, about 3 feet in front of me.

Sorry that wasnt much of a story.

Happened to me too with my sister at the beginning of July. We wanted to go in the pool. We looked at each other: "Looks like it stopped, we can go swin" BAMMM ! It was all white for a secondand it was real loud. I looked at my sister and said: "You know, think I'll wait for tomorrow."

I seem to remember staring out an open door during a rainstorm at my old elementary school, a loooooooooong time ago, and seeing a bright white flash hit the ground mere feet in front of me. Didn't seem like a big deal at the time, though...

I remember during last year when me and the JROTC took a trip to this place to held pull weeds and stuff. It's called the Nigerian Wetlands in Illinios that we went to and a storm came while we were outside and while we took shelter in a barn there was a strike of lightening that struck the ground about twenty feet away. Also when one of my classmates stuck her hand outside while it was going on, she proclaimed that she almost got struck by lightening.

Almost.

Also, I would doubt the validity of this. It had to strike something, and something high up. If this did happen, which I doubt, it had to hit something, therefore you didn't almost die. If that something wasn't there, you were probably safe.

Nope, that was my bad.

We had some pretty close strikes today...one that was loud enough to wake my sister up who sleeps through chainsaw going off. Never been exceedingly close or outside during a lightning storm though.

It can happen by just hitting the ground. My girlfriends dad told me a story during a thunder storm a few days ago. He was in Ottawa in a parking lot during a very severe thunderstorm. There was a UPS type person (delivery person) walking up to a house. He knocked on the door, stepped back, and waited. The person had come to the door just as lightning hit the UPS guy. She opened the door to a dead man on her doorstep. Talk about scary.

My moms brother also got hit by lightning in a feild in Germany. It just shocked him more than anything. He survived the hit.

Glad you are safe tho Kario.

Most lightening comes from the ground... just be careful not to be standing next to a telephone pole or something...

Thought I've never been nearly hit with one, I can think of one lightning storm I've been in. When I went on vacation to the east coast a few summers ago, there were serious thunder and lightning storms pretty much the whole time I was there.. they were much worse than anything I get here at home in CA.
I could see it very very close to my relatives' house I was staying in, maybe a couple hundred yards away, but it never got closer.

I've seen lightning hit within the general vicinity but never "close" to me. We don't get many serious storms to begin with.

i assume that it was lightning but no rain. otherwise, if lightning stuck three feet from you, the water on the ground would have conducted it and electrocuted you.

Hmm... Can a golf ball kill you?
Once, our P.E class was playing golf with plastic golf balls, but someone brought a real one in. Anyway! Everyone was standing way back and watching my friend take a swing at it. So he hit it good!

The ball went up, and it looked like it would go nowhere near me...but it just started curving, and curving. I couldn't react really... But right at the last second, I bent my knees and kinda fell back, but without falling... Some Matrix thing I was told, lol.

I felt the ball hit the fringe of my hair, and when I got back up, everyone was calling me "The Matrix Guy". I was popular for a while! People were high-fivin' me and everything! That's not even big in Australia.

My friend who hit the ball came runnin' over, and was so0o0 scared! He thought I was gonna hit him, and he kept apologizing... Not like it was his fault really, and there was no harm done.

I almost choked to death at work. I was mopping, eating a burger. Slipped a bit. Piece of food got stuck in my throat. Fortunately for you all, I have had this happen to me before. I just had to ram my stomach against the corner of a table to adminster a sort of "auto-Heimlech" and I can control the muscles in my neck really well (being a wrestler in my weight division...Well, when you have a lot of weight going down on your neck...you get used to that kind of stuff and learn from it) I managed to dislodge the piece of food.

That happened to me once. Well, I didn't get electrocuted, but a small part of it went through my foot, and it had just rained, so the grass was all wet. It wasn't really close though, maybe 200 m away or something. (I suck at telling distances.)

And the strange is that it struck on a football (soccer) field, so it was as flat as it could be.

(I wasn't on the football field where it struck, but there were some kids there playing.)

Heh, and this is at least the third time I'm mentioning this.

"There is so many unknowns about lightning bolts...Due to the intense heat, I have to ask...Are the particles of silicon on your skin glass? Because you know, the interior of a lightning bolt is that hot, and when it strikes, it has a two foot radius of heat. So you know where they've struck."
