Someone should make a hack of FFV, but a prequal. What I mean is, someone should of made a prequal in the past. Like you know the four dawn warriors, Galuf, Kelga, zogma, and dogan. Of coarse they didn't. But someone should make a hack like the prequal. I don't know if FFV has a major hacking editor. Like Temploral Flux.

The only editors I am aware of that edit FFV is Final Fantasy 5 Multi Editor, made by JCE3000GT.

Download it at his site:
http://www.blitzkrieg.finalconquest.net/

And some documents and the like are available at Collapse of Heaven and Earth:
http://www.tenchinohoukai.greatnow.com/FF5.html

As for that someone, perhaps it could be you?

If you want to hack the graphics, they should be easy to find. Everything (as far as I know) is uncompressed; be on the lookout for 1,2,3 and 4bpp throughout.

Scripted events and text? Ask someone who's done a translation. I'd suggest working with the 20-mega translated copy rather than the 16-mega original rom before expansion, not just because English text is right there but also because you have more room for scripting.

Sound and music? No idea how the music data is stored, but the sounds are standard-issue bit-rate-reduced of course--about 150k of them dispersed across the ROM.

Map data? No friggin' clue here--wish there were a decompression/recompression package.

Since you mentioned event data, I remember I archived an old post by Jigglysaint.

-------------------
Here's what I've found so far:

8408D - location of a 3 byte pointer used for 2 treasure chests in Tycoon castle that contain cabins, and can be stolen by Lone Wolf(in a secret passage in the right tower). They arn't real treasure chests, but rather events. The pointer 0A 4C C9 leads to:

94E0A - event data for the 2 lonewolfable chests containing cabins in Tycoon castle. Each event, which is a variable length, is made of 3 byte event code, and 2 byte effect data. It's not fully cracked, but the format seems easy enough. There are effect codes that add and take away items, magic, display messages, do whatever. I've also managed to enter the sunken Worus tower before going into the tower for the first time, and Galuf doesn't have any mimic sprites.

113410 - start of the treasure chest data. There are 4 bytes, the first 2 are the location of the chest, and the last 2 tell you what's inside. The third byte can be set to either give money, magic, items, or items or magic with a monster inside.

I don't recall there being a prequal of any kind to FFV. None of the FF's follow the previous storyline, (with FFX-2 to FFX being the lone exception) so I'm don't quite follow you on this one.

If you are adamant about wanting a prequal, why not hack one yourself?

I said there should of been a prequal back then. Now someone should make a hack but with a prequal.

You could probably make a prequal with any FF engine, simply because the world would still be united then. Though you wouldn't have the class system (Unless you did FF3j... Which doesn't have an editor)...

I'd like to see an editor FFV as well, it was one of my favorite FFs...

I'd rather have a FF3j editor. IIRC, a guy at GameFAQS had at found locations dataandsome tile data as well.

There are already some FF3J editors, if I'm not mistaken. And I remember that offset table--explained the scripting, and RLE format of the map data, nicely. But I agree that editing the game would be nice--it was one of the best NES games ever and had superb graphics, music and gameplay for the time. I can't wait for the DS port--I really want to own the game legally.

Lenophis, in the game story itself, there are details of the adventures of the Four Braves of Dawn, thirty years before the events of FFV. A game made from that souds like a lot of fun, and you wouldn't even need to do much map hacking since their actions take place mainly on Galuf's world (I forget the name, if it had one). You could use a combination of existing enemies and newly-designed ones.

Just to throw out some ideas --

* Take all that unused map space and make some immense towns with plenty of side quests to do; maybe some new areas which were given short shrift in the original game

* Set it in an alternate reality and have things turn out differently from how they did in the original FFV

* Hand out the jobs in bits and pieces rather than in three big clumps; make things a little harder

Now I've got a hankering to play this again. Haven't touched it in almost a decade!

What work has been done on the scripting side of FF3j? I've taken a look at it, and found where the scripting for the first sequence is, but I don't want to repeat the work that has already been done.
