Oh boy... this is going to cause some problems.

It was just announced that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been stripped of its M rating by the ESRB and assigned a new rating of AO - the first time any console game has been given such a rating as far as I know. This is causing a HUGE ripple...

- All copies of the game currently on shelves must either be removed or re-rated from M to AO.
- A new version of San Andreas without the Hot Coffee mod will be produced and released, but only in the fourth quarter. This version will be rated M.
- Take Two's stock is going to tumble tomorrow, as they've had to downgrade their earnings forecasts due to this.
- Several stores, such as Wal-Mart, will likely be removing their copies of the game today or tomorrow.
- Take Two is considering legal action against Datel, the makers of Action Replay, for apparently "profiting" from changing around the content of the game. (This has a snowball's chance in hell IMO, because all a judge would have to do is refer to Nintendo vs. Galoob in the Game Genie case to shoot this down; and besides, it wasn't like Datel had inside knowledge about this.)

So... over/under for a new round of congressional hearings regarding game ratings? I say 3 months.

The Hot Coffee mod is a patch (PC) or Action Replay code (PS2 and probably Xbox) that allows a player to unlock sex scenes that were left behind in the code (and thus aren't used in game). They activate a sex mini-game, basically.

BTW, fourth quarter = August to October. I'd think September would be realistic for new copies to appear.

I think that that is stupid that they are rerating the game. Its not the companies fault that people found ways to unlock the profane scenes that were locked away deep within the code. Stupid ESRB...

They should just give Action Replay an AO.

Dont go blaming the ESRB for this.

The makers of the game are supposed to send the highest rated stuff to the ESRB for rating. They just didnt include hot coffee, so the ESRB couldnt have known.

I blame the company for leaving it IN there. Hackers ALWAYS find the leftover stuff. Why cant the companies see that

The code SHOULD have been taken out in the first place but the excuses that Rockstar/Take Two used (saying that the code was added in which is impossible since you can't modify DVD data) were asinine.

Adults Only. 18+ basically. (Mature is 17+ but AO is a far more harsh rating.)

Its like the NC17 in movie theaters...

R is to M, as AO is to NC17.

Yeah...having an M doesn't give that sexual connotation that AO does...
I believe whoever made the decision to leave the data there is resigning...

well...i seems that the line has finally been crossed, yeah?

I haven't seen anything regarding people resigning yet.

Best line so far today is Jim Ankner (Take Two spokesperson) saying: "There is sex content in the [San Andreas] disc....The editing and finalization of any game is a complicated task and it's not uncommon for unused and unfinished content to remain on the disc."

Rockstar then said that he was misquoted. XD

Oh come on...there is a sex mini game in God of War...we have games like Playboy and the Guy Game...but this....urg...

Bullshit.

So anyway, on top of my busy arse day and a 12+ hour shift, I get a call from my area manager saying that any and all GTA: San Andreas need to come down and into the back room.

As of right now, we are not allowed to sell the game.

Bullshit.

I'm tired, so I might go into this more later.

But this is not doing anything at all in Europa, as we're not afraid of boobs as some people are over there.

And oh, GTA: San Andreas is already having the highest rating here. 18+.

Ugh, it annoys me that the sex in the game get's people more upset than the violence...

Holy Crap. Call me crazy, but never thought I'd see this. You know, one of those "It could never happen to me" types of deals.

From strictly a consumer standpoint, it will be interesting to see what becomes of this little development. As far as the future of gaming goes, I'm getting quite a bit of bad vibes from this...

Hmmm....

With the success of this game(and God of War), there's a good chance that we might see a LOT more AO games.

I say: GOOD.

Mainly because Rockstar's previous stand on such things as game-crippling, save-erasing bugs has been "Fuck our fans, we're not fixing them".

Karma's a bitch, ain't it Rockstar?

That, and I maintain that Rockstar - GTA Series = Acclaim in terms of overall game quality.

Though really, another problem is the rating system in the first place...see today's Penny Arcade newspost.

EDIT: "But Emptyeye wut about teh congressmens who want 2 deni me my rite to fuk and sh00t hookars!!!11?1/1?" Well, maybe they should've considered that angle before deciding to A. effectively bypass the ESRB rating process, and B. pull an Ashlee Simpson and blame everyone but themselves for it.

It was more the QA that let them down *IF* they totally forgot to remove the sequence.

Or general laziness. In which case they only have themselves to blame. And running around in circles with back-and-forth conflicting statements isn't helping.

Honestly, this makes me wonder if games are going to have less "Hidden" things in them from now on. This is the first example that shows that leftover thing can be pretty damaging.

Though, what were they on when they decided to program this in the first place ?
