Windows, because I'm too lazy to partition my HD and install Linux.

Have only used Knoppix as far. I plan to use QTparted on Knoppix soon so I can install Red Hat Linux. The reason I chose Red hat is becuse it's so mainstream... but there could be better ones. |

Redhat didn't work well for me, but Debian is doing fine. Main reason? It's easier for me to handle packages in Debian for me than Redhat. |

I used/have used Mandrake Linux via Connectix Virtual PC 4 so I can use SheepShaver x86. If you want to know what SheepShaver x86 is, it is actually an PowerPC Mac Emulator that emulates the early ppc processors (604 too), but a 4MB PCI ppc rom is required though.

Redhat for my NES PC, XP for my desktop. But, since this is a Linux poll, I'll vote Redhat.

My favourite Linux machine is not a distro. Rather, something built from scratch. You'd know exactly what's on it and stuff...

I only have Windows too, mostly because that's what I'm the most used to and there's various programs for it that I always use ... I wouldn't mind trying Linux, though (I even had a dream about this last week ) ... maybe I can get something like VMWare and install Linux on that, I wouldn't get full performance but at least I'd still have my Windows environment behind it and wouldn't risk messing it up I tried it a bit at school before, but didn't check (or remember) qwhich distribution they had |

Acmlm: I wouldn't be surprised if the VMWare doesn't work. Linux is very dependent on hardware. I haven't had any success in getting the X Server running in Bochs. Just a heads up. |

Ah, good to know then so I don't waste my time if I ever try it ... virtual devices might not work that well Then that's where having 2 computers would help ... at least my connection is fast enough to download 650MB in 25 minutes (at best) |

Debian is teh w00tness. Its default installer is not nearly as user-friendly as that of, say, Mandrake (I looked at it and immediately made Rando do the dirty work...he's great at installing weird stuff, and I'm lazy ), but I think the packaging is much better. Under Mandrake 8, I had to deal with dependency hell, and RPMDrake magically broke one day and we never figured out how to fix it. On the other hand, Debian's packaging software is quite reliable, dependency problems are rare (and usually fixed with a dist-upgrade), and there's even synaptic, which is a nice GUI front end for the command-line tools. You do have to go with the unstable version if you want recent packaged software, but I haven't had any complaints about its stability. My box's record uptime was around 120 days, and then we had to physically move said box, which required that we unplug it.

I haven't installed linux yet. the only one I've used so far is knoppix, that boots off a CD and runs in RAM. I do have RH on-hand, though, and when I finally install linux on this comp I'll use that, mainly because it's a more mainstream distro, which I can use until I become more comfortable with- and knowledgable about- linux, at which point I could make a more informed decision about which distro to use. for the time being, though, I'm still using Win98SE. |

Nope, I'm using Windows XP... at least it doesn't crash. I've taken a little thought into using a version of Linux, though.

Mike... your posts makes no sense..... you HAVE to have a linux distro.... I seriously doubt... you downloaded the Linux Kernel source.... and created your OWN Distro of Linux..... |
