| I wouldn't say that he said, "You're gay! I kill you now!" though that is probably the level he thinks at. It's more of that he abused his son in hopes of him avoiding becoming gay, which in and of itself (and if true), is pretty bad and misguided as well. | |||

| I almost vomited as I read that, as I have young children in my life whom I adore, and the horrid image slipped into my mind for just a moment, of them suffering the same fate. If the father gets off for this, it will send a clear message all around the nation that the "gay panic" defense is legitimate, that you can murder the defenseless because of your homophobia. That would be a dark day for all humanity. The death of the toddler doesn't strike me as much as the fact that this was going on for a lengthy period of time. I can't bear to imagine what daily life for such a child could be like, I feel like I might faint or collapse. It's when I read things like this that my personal opposition towards the death penalty is questioned. I want so passionately to believe that all people are capable of being good, I want to believe this desperately...I just sometimes question whether this is realistic. Danielle I personally believe that no one can control what they are attracted to anymore than they can control what tastes or smells good to them, but I don't think it's quite the same as saying, "I always knew I was gay," simply because children have no concept of sexuality, so they don't know whether they're gay or straight or metrosexual until we tell them that such things exist and that they must choose one of the labels to apply to themselves. That's one of the reasons I love kids so much; they have no concept of labels and groups the way we do. They just see people for people. They don't see gay or straight, black or white, Christian or Jew; they just see people, and that's a lesson that many of us adults could stand to re-learn. |
