I'm sorry, but this has to be the most menial job on the planet. Your responsibility is too call random people on a list from their database and ask them to buy your product (and pretty much piss them off). What some telemarketers are doing now is putting you on a program that they will send you free stuff on a trial basis for a period of time before charging you automatically. (And then you have to call a certain number that they send you in the mail to cancel this "subscription.") It's a new strategy that I think will get a lot of people into trouble. (If it's not new, then it's new to me.) Anybody else have problems with telemarketers or have any stories of telemarketer experiences?

I think just about everyone has problems with telemarketers these days. Anyway, these annoying people just keep on calling my house so much that sometimes we have to disconnect the phone line so that they won't be able to bug us. I didn't know that the can put you on certain programs. Do they even tell you if they already put you on some program or do they just put you on a program without letting you know?

Call and take your name off the database. It's magical.

I have a kinda funny story about a telemarketer. I had like 5 call my house within a day, and eventually I just picked up the phone. They were advertising some food product I think. Anyway, I just kept asking them questions saying just answer this last one and I will buy your product. I asked them all kinds of questions that had nothing to do with the product. They kept saying they weren't going to answer the questions, but I just kept asking. It went on for like 15 minutes before they hung up.

Now I heard somewhere that they weren't aloud to hang up on a potential client. Is that true?

Anyway, they pissed me off so bad with all their calling, I decided to piss them off by questioning them to death. It was quite fun actaully!

I do telemarketing occasionally.

It's the most hilarious job ever, especially when you have a tape recorder.

We never have problems with telemarketers because we've been taken off the list, and threatened to sue the company that was calling us. it worked.

I remember when we used to get calls. One time I remember it went like this...

Me: Hey, mom there's a telemarketer on the phone, asking for the lady of the house.

Mom: Tell them we don't want any...and tell them to take us off that list.

So of course I translated...

Me: *on the phone* Hey! We don't want anything you have. And we want you to take us off that list of yours. Okay!?!

Female Telemarketer: But sir if you'll just...

Me: Shut up! Why don't you leave me alone. I'm on the edge of a mental breakdown. All I needed was love. Can you understand that? Do you know what love is, miss?

She hung up and never called back.

Some of my friends have done the job. The money isn't bad but the challenge is staying with it. A lot of people just don't have the willpower necessary to keep calling and dealing with people.

Add to that the fact that the odds of you working for a not-very-ethical company are pretty good...

Actually, I think telemarketing would be a great summer job. You could really add some humor into it, like calling people ma'am when you can tell they are a guy.

One less person I'd give my phone number to!
I kinda think it would be fun but then again, stupid.

I get a lot of calls from telemarketers...and they drive me crazy! I remember one time I was with a group of friends, and we were discussing funny things we could say to telemarketers if they called. One of the best ones we came up with is to act like we suddenly fell in love with the person's voice, and to repeatedly come on to them as they try to sell their product.

Now I just need a telemarketer of the opposite gender to call, and I can put this into action!

Okay, best idea ever...

Though, why does it have to be the opposite gender? (Gets multiple stares from people who dont exist)

Two good ways to get rid of them:
1) Call a number that doesn't exist. Record that beeping sound it makes (use a good high-quality recorder; a tape probably won't work). Play that when you answer the phone. Automated dialers will assume the number is invalid and remove it! (Telezapper does this. )

2) Just answer, and if it's a telemarketer just keep on talking "I can't come to the phone, leave a message, BEEP" and hang up.

Though if you tell them to stop calling you and remove you from their list, they have to. And don't buy that "we just call random numbers" excuse. One, they can keep a list of who not to call, and two, nobody does that because they'd get tons of modems and invalid numbers.

I dislike telemarketers, but I don't get many calls from them.

Last one I got the telemarketer went "Hello little girl, can I speak to your mommy?" so I hung up. I don't sound that young..

Oh, oh, I got another idea! When a telemarketer calls, you talk to them and try to sell them a product of your own! They'd be so confused! I'd love to hear their reaction.
