(Note: This is actually not a debate, but it is indeed something I am laughing about, although, the victim is probably someone I know. Oh, and mods or admins, feel free to move this, I don't know where exactly to put this.) Article Here's a quote from the article. Authorities in Lubbock are investigating an incident in which three members of the boys basketball team at Southwest Christian School in Fort Worth are accused of holding down a younger teammate and rubbing their genitals on his head, neck and shoulders during a road trip. If you don't know already, I actually go to that school. It's about 230 people. Which means that odds are I know the people who did it, and the victem. Since the suspects are 16, odds are that they also in my class or the proceding class. What pisses me off is that the school says nothing sexual happened (this is from a letter they sent out to us), and they only gave the perps suspension and they arn't allowed to play in anymore athletic games. What makes me laugh is that this shows how shallow people are...and that you can't trust people on who they claim to be. Christians? Yeah. Paris Hilton is one too. I hope something comes out of this, and that whoever did it get there comings, because this is a black maark on everyone - me, the school, other students and Christianity. |

That is kinda messed up...and at a Christian school...sick...I go to a Catholic school and the only thing that is close to this is that a guy and a girl has sex in the locker room and got caught.

Well it's not sexual in the terms most people would think. Sexual harrassment, but that happens all the time. The fact that it's at a christian school has a little more edge to it, but they're still guys that think they're cool picking on a little guy. At least they're getting punished. :/ |

Why was this thread stickied? (And the article requires registration... ) Sadly, most of the time stuff like that does get unoticed. People get bullied in the most "horrofying ways", without anyone doing it against it. Oh wait, maybe they only care if it's sexual... (edited by Kitten Yiffer on 07-17-05 05:13 PM) |

The ClockExplosion says... This is an odd statement you have made. Being Christian does not equate being a kind human being. Being Christian is not a badge of honor, nor a merit, so how is their sexually harassing someone and their being Christian even vaguely oxymoronic? Furthermore, how is this article at all related to Christianity? You could have also said, "Local whites screw themselves over" or "Local males screw themselves over," but in any case it's just unnecessary, because it is not related to the subject matter whatsoever. Furthermore, that website requires registration to use, so few people are going to actually bother putting themselves through the process to read the article. Please, for the sake of the quality of these message boards, offer more effort and thought before making any more topics. |

Damnit, Slay beat me to the punchline. Christians ain't "better" people than others, so why should this be in any way "extra" shocking?

Well since these assholes weren't operating under the pretense of doing something Christian, it's really not a blow to Christianity. However, I went to a Catholic school for high school and some kids from my grade started leaving hydrocloric acid bombs on people's porches. They got caught and suspended and sent to juvy. You can bet the media was all over that. When you have a reputation (in this case Christian schools generally have a better reputation), it's that much easier to get smeared. So I'd say it more hurt the public relations for the school.

I'd have to agree. I remember when I went to a Catholic elementary school. Someone in my grade threw dog poop at a neighbour's window and there were articles for three weeks in the local newspaper (slow three weeks, a murder trial had just finished up and nothing was really happening (*EXCEPT FOR KNITTING MASTERS CHALLENGE* :o)). When I was put into a public school...Well, a group of kids in my grade waltzed down to the Goodwill with stink bombs and blazers (little firecrackers that burst into flame). They caused 1000 dollars worth of damage and no media coverage. (And that week was even slower! They wrote an editorial on how the Phantom Menace could relate to local politics and ran it on front page ).

As soon as Christians are involved in incidents like this, media blows it up beyond infinity. Geez, Christians can do terrible stuff too so this is nothing out of the unusual. " People get bullied in the most "horrofying ways", without anyone doing it against it." I did something against it myself. Using my fists. |

The Trapster says... I believe that this happens as a result of political correctness. "If you can't say anything nice..." is assumed to apply to all minorities and all religious groups. I know lazy and unintelligent gay men, I know black guys who are rude and contemptable, I know Jewish women who are bitter and overbearing. Does saying so make me a homophobe, racist and bigot? I must say, it is frustrating being colorblind in a society that sees people for what minority group they belong to. When I was in gradeschool I observed the same. If a white student would backsass the teacher, he wouldn't suffer the same scolding as if it were a Hispanic student, and yet, at the very same time, if a white student punched a black student, he would be punished much more severely than if it were a black student punching a white one. Like it or not, most of the people in this country and indeed the world still treat people differently based upon superficial things such as skin color or ancestry. But the supposed "remedy" for this is doing much more harm than good; we're told to ignore or overlook our differences. I see this as a terrible thing! We should not hide or ignore our differences, because it is undeniable that we are different from one another. We have different facial features, different complexions, and of course, very different cultures. What I think we, as a society, need to do, is not ignore our differences, but celebrate them as the things that make us unique, while at the same time, acknowledging that our differences don't make us better or worse than one another. Different isn't bad, but different isn't good, either; different is different. Period. |

The entire reasoning behind this is that he's taking a jab at the fact that stereotypical fanatic Christians think they're hot shit and better than everyone else. They push their beliefs on everyone else and think that everyone else has to take it from them because they've got a book to back them up - a book that nobody can ever agree on what it's saying in the first place.

Originally posted by Melvin That's pretty stereotypical.. not all Christians want to rebel or think they're better than everyone else. And I know that not all Christians force their beliefs upon everyone else. I'm not even a Christian myself but I don't think you're right saying that. These guys were just being jerks. It happens in any society, any school, this time it just happened to be at one where there would be an uproar about it. |

Okay, first of all I wasn't taking a jab at anyone, except the people at MY school, who I probably know. I'm a kind of a Christian, myself...if I should be jabbing anyone, it's me! Second of all, I was saying not to judge a book by it's cover, yeah, I know that some Christians at Christians schools aren't really Christians. I go to school with them. I know them. Third of all, there's a that website that gives you an email for registration...use that. I'd be happy to put the article up on display, as well. Just tell me. his is an odd statement you have made. Because it is related. They go to my school, they worship in the chapel. Why the hell not can I put that into the message? They are Christian (I know who they are for a fact now), and it is who I thought they were. |
