So yeah, what is everyone's opinion on the best free game creation software, and the best paid game creation software. I do actually want to know these things to see which I should get for serious game creation. | |||

Well, most free game creators can't compete with a nice, licensed game engine from the professionals. Problems are... 1) The end result is only as good as the game authors make it. 2) Even if you're skilled enough (see 1), the engine may not allow. Long live source code! If I had 5000 bucks and asked the creators of Command & Conquer, I'd have just about all I ever need to make a nice RTS. But I could also spazz the Forge for an opensource RTS engine. Again, see 1. Well I saw this thing called the Torque Engine, which I've seen a very nice game made with that (Blockland if anyone wants to know). This was $100 for a personal version and comes with a FPS and a Racing Game Starter Kit. You can also get an RTS starter kit for an extra $50. Anyone here have this, and if so, is it any good? | |||

Game Maker (www.gamemaker.nl) can make some really good games! It's easy to use & haves almost invinite possibilites! But it's only for 2d game creation (it haves some 3d functions but they are limited) The net is full with bad & crappy games , made with Game Maker , just because the program is easy to use , and most of the 'game makers' are big jerks |

For 3D: If you arent wanting to dive into C++ with DirectX or OpenGL then you could try DarkBasic Pro. If you are wanting to learn C++ then you could also purchase DarkGame SDK. Theese are all paid options but they are good for learning 3D game programming. For 2D: You might want to look into SDL or Allegro for learning 2D game programming in C++. They are free and simple libraries that take care of DirectX/OpenGL for you. |

The best game development systems, all around, are Java and C. It takes about thirty lines of code to make a generic game framework in Java. Said framework having almost all of the features of Game Maker's system, in addition to being able to add whatever you want by virtue of Java being a great programming language. Java's also faster than Game Maker, especially if you run it in "Server Mode", which makes Java run faster than you can get out of most compilers for C, at the cost of a longer loading time. C is about as fast as you can reasonably expect to get on a computer*. It'll take twice as much code for your framework, which isn't really that bad. It'll also eat your soul the first time you try to set up a compiler and all the libraries you want to use. After that, it's pretty spiffy. *Assembly is unreasonable on a Windows machine, or if you want to port things. On the other hand, it's not as unreasonable on most consoles, and it's a lot easier than its reputation says. |
