I'm posting this at several Chrono boards. That said, I figured I should post it here, simply to ensure a fair and representative sample. While many of you might not even fall into the hardcore CT fan realm, you're a lot more likely to have done a little something here and there with modification than the others.

This is just a curious poll. Crimson Echoes now has a dedicated mapper, which will cut demo development sharply. I'm still learning things for Temporal Flux, and just to gauge rom hacking / playing among the general CT fanbase, I'm doing this survey.

That said, this might be a stretch of the board description, so please don't flame

Well, I've done some fooling with Temporal Flux, which is an amazing editor. I'm thinking of making a hack of Chrono Trigger at some point, though I need to think of a plot at least somewhat close to worthy of that game to do it.

As I said on the Gfaqs board, I'm working on a patch to disable the battle music (b/c the dungeon music is usually much better). It's successful in most cases. The only problems I've had so far is the dungeon music falling in volume and then quickly jumping back up after a battle is over. And the battles in the Sand Pit also seem to trigger battle music for whatever reason. Haven't spent much time on it but I'm totally working out of a hex editor with a few notes, so what do you expect. There have been no issues with boss music not triggering as of yet.

Are you doing this through ASM hacking somehow?
This sort of thing can be done through the events in TF, just by toggling a bit in the Battle command byte.

I know how to do pretty much anything I want to Chrono Trigger, and am still in the learning process myself when it comes to events and the like, but it's nothing that a person can't pretty much master after spending some time with it. If only I could hex edit everything in real life to give myself more time for it...

Yeah, that last "master" category is sort of for you guys and any other knowledgable rom hackers who could probably get CT down in a short period of time.

I'm busy working on this, by the way. It's the first tutorial! As such, I'm writing it in a total neophyte manner of speaking, so anyone can read it and take the first step to creating NPCs and scripting scenes.

Thanks for the votes so far everyone. As expected, ACMLM's is pulling a lot of the weight for the later choices. Though there are only like 30 or so votes so far across the community.

I've used a few basic editors, made a few pro action replay codes, and found some offsets for a few things in the ROM.
I tried Temporal Flux briefly, but I'm not willing to put in the time necessary to make proper use of it.

While I don't have any desire to create an extensive CT mod, I would certainly be interested in playing one.

Chickenlump: Yes via ASM hacking. Are you sure it works in all areas? Like I said what I've done works in pretty much all areas except the sandpit. It seems to be using a slightly different routine to trigger the battle music data. But hell I only worked on it for like a couple hours at most.

Good luck MathonNapkins--the battle music is honestly bad IMHO, and it was one of the many tracks where Yasunori's inexperience showed (he was only 23 when the game came out.) The game does have a lot of good tracks; I think "A Shot of Crisis" is one of the most underrated.

As for the poll, I've messed around with Lunar Compress a bit to extract graphics and maps; I'm surprised there's been so little work on Bahamut Lagoon, which uses exactly the same compression format.

The battle music bit check Chickenlump mentioned is at $C0/1BBB Changing the following command to $80 (Branch Always) will keep the current song. The problem with the Sand Pit is that it uses PlaySong {45} commands in the Event code to start the battle music early. If you delete each of the commands that will fix it. Some other dungeons might use a similar method.

In all truth I have no experience with it, but I think that CT is something I should try; it looks fairly challenging (And fun).

I tried to start a hack with Temporal Flux three times in total, once on the first release, once with one in between and once with the now-most-up-to-date-one. Each time I did so, it refused to apply any stage changes properly (mostly, only some parts of the level were stored back), fucked up other levels' data upon more major tile passability map edits and ended up corrupting the ROM. Also, it holocausted my sweet ROM headers.
No, I shall not be touching this satanic thing anymore.

I encountered the same problems, but it was a necessary stage of development. Because of the early use, Geiger was able to ascertain that the program was still saving bad location data and fixed that; only through trying it will we discover and smooth out more bugs. I've edited four or five maps since 1.7 now with no errors, and this includes a 1024 x 1024 cathedral. So the bad stuff isn't permanent by any means.

I tried to give it a shot, but the scripting language made my brain hurt...
