I wasn't intending to post, but this just infuriates me.

Music isn't any better or worse than it was "back then," really. We look back and see all these good bands, and remember no bad bands. Why? Because we don't remember the mediocre bands from back then. Think about the number of bands you've heard from the 90's and the 2000's, and then theink about the number of bands you've heard from the 80's, 70's, and 60's. I bet you know less bands the further back you go. Why? Because you weren't forced to listen to every single one-hit wonder of the 60's and 70's like you are with the 2000's. There's no more or less good music out there today, it's just that we're more aware of the shitty music that's around.

Meh. As long as Moby is still making music, I don't care. He's basically the only artist I give two shits about anymore.

Do what I do. Listen to electronica. It's basically unheralded in the United States, but it's huge in Europe and stuff. And it's really, really good.

My advice is to people like this (ie fans of one artist or one genre) is to broaden your damn horizions. Sure, 95% of music in each genre is either shitty or contributes nothing new / original to the genre, but that other 5% is amazing and well worth listening to. Don't be afraid to try on new styles of music. Worst that will happen is that you won't like it.

Way to oversimply western music history There's plenty more out of each of those generations. In the 70's we had psychaedlic rock starting to become popular with arists like Jimi Hendrix, we had more experimental bands that would pave the way for later genres like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, we had an underground prog scene in the earlier bit of the 70's with bands like Rush and Pink Floyd, and we had an underground punk scene in the later 70's with bands like The Misfits. The 80's gave birth to new-wave, true, but it also saw hip-hop evolve into a more basic form of the rap we know today, and it saw an underground heavy metal explosion with the NWOBHM and thrash metal. You totally missed grunge in the 90's which should be nearly impossible... (Don't bitch about me about 90's brit-rock, it's just lighter grunge and you know it ) And Electronica and industrial were birthed sometime around that time as well, though I'm no expert on either of thier histores.

That enough listening material to keep you busy for a while? I hope I properly addressed Arwon's point up there.

Legion, you break my heart.

Seriously, I think BYOB and Question! are the worst picks for singles off the new album. Listen to "Radio/Video," "Cigaro," or "Violent Pornography" and you should hear what I'm talking about. They're catchy, heavy, and proggy all at the same time. Daron's use of 3rds in that album makes me weak in the knees.

"Back then" the top 40 charts were actually enjoyable. I can't say the same today.

I do have broad horizons; I just believe that Moby is the only artist who isn't a greedy insensitive prick who cares only about money and nothing else. He doesn't do drugs, he doesn't get in trouble with the law, he doesn't hate poeple for not liking what he likes.
Anyways, I do like other stuff: Green Day, Nirvana, Aerosmith, Modest Mouse, Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, The Postal Service...

Journey?

Anyway, The Scropions were a German band.

Either way, America still has it's share of kick ass bands. Always has, always will.

Moby?
A certain Eminem song is popping into my head and making me laugh. Moby.

So many people do this thing where they think it's cool to say the US is crap. Crap music, for example.
Just because crap might be more popular, that doesn't mean that's the only option.
Honestly, don't listen to the radio if that's the way you feel about music.

Why does everyone hate Green Day?

HUH?
have you heard of thrice?
They give away a portion of each album sold to a charity, look around on the internet for it.
Have you heard of Subcity? they work with thrice, and other bands, they give away money made from records to help the charities.
Did you hear about what happened to finch? on my 31st, their album got leaked, and they ENCOURAGED fans to go and download it.
so not every band is in it for the money obviously

I still listen to Green Day, with the exception of a couple of their albums, which were complete crap. (Warning anyone?)

But yeah, we have awesome music. We're the undisputed kings of thrash metal.

Haha. Yup. I shortened things up there. Nobody likes Green Day because the lead singer wears mascara and other stuff around his eyelids. It scares me.
I do like Time of Your Life, though.

You're a tard if that's how you judge what good music is. Who cares if he wears mascera so all the chicks will dig him. Have you even listened to one of the nine Green Day albums or are you just saying shit to be cool?
I'd like to quote jas right now with a STFU NOOB but that would be rude. Only jas can pull that off.

The real thing that makes Greenday an inherently dislikeable band is their obnoxious American teen motif. True, they've been around for years and harbour more sincerity than all these Mickey Mouse versions of them, e.g. Good Charlotte, but to me their sound is far more reflective of a homogenized media version of life than it is of either reality or surreality. This is reflected in their overly general lyrics and their stiff, almost quantized riffs and rhythms...the whole package is far too clinical.

As for music being worse than it used to be, I can see why such a conclusion would be reached, given that we haven't had any real big musical 'movements' disrupt the charts for a good while, and any minor ones that have (the whole Franz Ferdinand/The Killers style rock sounds) are blatant rehashes of what's come before. Scratch beneath the surface and there's all kinds of exciting stuff going on in a myriad of genres from folk to techno to soul to hip-hop to grunge. It's just a case of knowing where to scratch.

I didn't say Green Day's music sucked! I just said the lead singer wore mascara.
So judgemental!

I agree with Place, too. They aren't even teens anymore, but have surrendered to America's call for their 'punk rock' style. Isn't the lead singer like 32 now?

witeasprinwow said what I wanted to say when I saw this. Music only seemed to be better in the old days because the only old music you hear is the good music.
However, what's with labeling noise as crap? I think Pixies kinda proved that noise can be oh-so-good.
