Cut and pasted from my LiveJournal, because I'm too lazy to re-type this. This starts off with a little visual interpretation of the events of March 31, 2004, between 7:45 AM and noon.

In case you didn't know, Deanna (my gf) and I recently started as subs. Teachers, not underwater craft. Got up some time around 6:00, dressed and everything mostly without incident. It was raining pretty bad, though. Anyway, I head down to the assignment: half a day, first grade. Shouldn't be TOO bad, right? (So say those of you who haven't done this before.)

The teacher was there when I got there (got confused with the directions), which was right when I was supposed to be there. She headed off to her workshop, and I sat down to read her notes. She did leave quite detailed notes (snaps for that), but I was a tad unclear on some things. Anyway, fifteen minutes later, the kids start filing in. They tell me what they're having for lunch, and that's settled. Time for morning announcements.

And that, kids, is when things start resembling the above pic.

It starts with a couple of them talking during the Pledge of Allegiance. Then during the anthem. Teacher comes in and harangues them for that. Go over to a calendar to start that bit... and everyone's talking and getting up. At some point, I ask if they'd do this if their regular teacher was there. What do they say? "...nooooo..." Gee, THANKS. Anyway, this takes so long that we're almost an hour late (!) for them to start doing their work. And everyone starts running around, banging on desks, coming up to me to ask questions, and generally being loud. I think every teacher on the floor (four of them) came in to tell them to be quiet. This was basically the entire day for me, but it doesn't express just how much of a train wreck it was. Imagine four hours of this. Oh, and they keep asking you if it's lunch time yet, and when it gets to be that time... you find out they set the clocks ahead an hour by accident. Eventually, they all started trying to get playtime (which, by the way, was built into the schedule) and start playing loudly instead. Some kids start chasing each other, then the pushing starts... No fighting, but I send the main perp to the office. He WON'T GO. One of the other kids offers to escort him, and FINALLY he goes... yeesh. They just wouldn't respect that for that morning, I was their teacher. FINALLY, a third-grade teacher comes in, reprimands them all, beating them over the head with the idea that they wouldn't do this if their teacher was there, and gets them back onto their lesson.

Which, by the way, WASN'T what I was left to do. ;;;

I'm really thinking about if I should sub again. Deanna says do it two more times, so it doesn't look like I had one bad experience and quit. But do I really want to subject myself to this? I mean, I could do so many more assigments that aren't going to end up like this (have a bunch of rotating classes, higher grades, etc.) but I HATED it.

Don't do this unless you really want to. Spare yourself the frustration.

Also, kids, PLEASE be considerate when you have a sub. They're people too.

You poor thing, sounds like you had a ruff day, you said that you were a sub for first year right... well your lucky your not a sub for high school kids, we would have done heaps worse to you. Anyway try it again like your friend said and if you find that something like that happens again or you just can't handle it then you will know not to do it again.

Well, I'd say go at least 2 more times, and see what happens.

When I started umpiring little league games, I hated it. I went the entire season...and well, it wouldn't make sense to tell you that I hated it, so I'll just go ahead and say, by the end of the season, I verbally comitted to 32 years of umpiring.

But really, you can't just quit after one go at it. Some of the coolest teachers I know are subs...you could, be up there too!

I'm terrible at giving advice.

If the kids are misbehaving make them afraid of you. Be tought from the very begining and don't take anything from any of them (this works mostly with younger kids). After they know you're in charge and they aren't then you can start having a bit more fun with them and be nicer.

All kids aren't like that, sure they'll try to get a way with stuff, but they won't necessarily act like that. You just need to get used to it more. I've had lost of subs that wrote letters to my teacher saying how we were such a wonderful class. Most teachers if they know they're going to be gone will lecture they're class first, and threaten something bad if they get any bad reports.

Hang in there, it'll get easier.

This is one thing that pisses me off. People who don't even respect thier teachers. Even if I don't like the class, or even the teacher, I try my best to make thier lives a bit easier.

Plus, It's not so tough if your school is filled with sexy teachers. I love my town.

A substitute's life isn't easy, as you've seen. High school can be somewhat less challenging if you've the fortune of handling a reasonably civil group of students; we usually offer at least some degree of respect to our subs, even if we sometimes refuse to do the work that the teacher's left for us .

We NEVER had problems with our subs even in elementary school. First grade was a breeze and we knew when to do work and when not to.

Unless we were specifically given a free period/free time, we didn't do that crap. Likely just one of those off days.
