If we haven't upset the French enough, they're going to invade us for sure now XD. London has won the Olympic Games for 2012!

The French media are labelling us as aggressive, some making comments about our involvement in Iraq and likening it to how we campeigned for the games. Britain, however, feels like France has been aggressive politically over the last month and has fiercely come out to support our bid.
I genuinely think our bid was more appropriate than Paris'. Our bid focused on the inspiration of the youth in Britain to become more active in sport, and to regenerate the nation's health and enthusiasm as well as one of the poorest areas of the country. Paris projected a "glamourous" setting for the games, which I do not think projected the Olympic spirit.

There's a hell of a lot to be done. The entire Olympic village has to be built from scratch, but the nation is on one hell of a high today. We'll get it done no problem

You mean NYC's last-minute, thrown together bid didn't get it? I'm shocked!

Congrats.

people in madrid were crying...not sure what to think of that

i wonder what did britian have going for it versus the others?

as for the NYC bid, since vancouver got the 2010 games, the probably of NYC hosting 2012 was very little since quite a few olympic games have been hosted on the NA continent since 1996?

We'll do it right for sure - barb wire hurdles and landmines in the long jump sandpit. It'll be even more special than the Special Olympics.

The Olympics ruin cities and always run over budget. It's better to not have them.

I guess I'm going to have to move back to bloody London now. XD My father saw the 1980 games in Moscow... Probably not as politically motivated in 2012... but, meh..

London has most of the facilities already set up, Ziff. They'll probably run at budget or maybe a *TEENSY* bit over it.

I was really hoping London won, they seemed to have the better package while the Paris bid was... eh. I couldn't see why it was favored aside from the "third time's the charm" thing. Even Dick Pound (Canadian IOC member, head of WADA) admitted that it was a case of "good bid, bad timing". :\

Congratulations to London!

London has less built than Paris, though. The infrastructure is not nearly as set up, neither.

Alas.

If you had the luck of the Irish.
You'd get the Olympics and you would be screwed.

congradulations, I don't have much more to say... it's only games. Yes, they're quite big but ultimately it won't matter where they are hosted (well, not too much)

Considering the odds of the Olympics going to the same COUNTRY twice in a row is astronomical...

It does matter in a sense; last thing you want to do is give them to a city and have them race against time to complete it, risking embarassment and public scorn. :\

That's really cool. If the Olympics were sooner, this would be the perfect reason to get my family to go there on vacation. I've been wanting to for years.

not all olympics put a city region into debt--but I guess most. I'm pretty sure one of the recent olympics was profitable... although, I'm not sure

hmm..2012 would mean I'd be 28 and should hopefully be out of school already but I'm pretty sure i'd be ridiculously expensive to go though so maybe not...

Yeah, but Chirac hasn't exactly made the best comments recently to the press either regarding Britain.

Oh well. It's karma.

Mayor Bloomberg (of NYC) is a fucking assclown. Throughout his term in office since 2001, he's closed a shitload of firehouses and schools, cut funding for some homeless programs, and other nasty shit.

THen he tried to get NYC to host the Olympics. He proposed that the west side area have a stadium built, which would result in the destruction of several buisinesses, but mostly a railroad yard. At first, he said "Oh, it's just going to be $200 million, that's not a big deal". This pissed off some people, but not everyone. Then word got out about how it would cost even more, up to $600 million. Right about before the $600m figure was released to the public, commercials were showing saing "Say NO to a West Side Stadium", and costs were listed.

The end total was $2 billion. The stadium got shot down in a heartbeat. Of course, Bloomberg, being the asshole he is, tried even harder, suggesting that a new baseball stadium be built near Shea Stadium, suggesting that it be 'a second home for the Mets and the Yankees' (who, of course, had working stadiums of their own). The stadium, if built, would had destroyed hundreds of businesses in the area to make room. No sooner does he announce it to try and lure the Olympics to NYC does London get picked.

Congrats, Bloomberg, you fucked up your chances of being re-elected. Personally, I couldn't be more happy that London is getting the olympics.
