In the rom, at offset 43b7c, I discovered a list of 3 letter words that are rude, vulgar, and racist.

Here's the list I found:

SS.
COK.
FUK.
FVK.
GAY.
DRE.
JAP.
JIZ.
KOC.
KUM.
LSD.
POT.
SEX.
TIT.
WOP.
666.
KKK.
HIV.
AUM.
SIT.
ASZ.
CUM.
DIK.
FAG.
KOK.
KVM.
AVM.
CVM.
A55.
C0K.
J1Z.
K0C.
P0T.
5EX.
T1T.
L5D.
W0P.
D1K.
K0K.
A5Z.
S1T.
H1V

It's all there, at that offset. I am looking at the Team of Protoman ROM. I have no idea if this was added by the dumper, or if it's somthing Capcom actually added. If it was Capcom, why they added this I have no idea.

I can't belive that people still make jokes about HIV dude, I had a friend who died of that 3 years ago.

That's foul if Capcom did put that in there. And if it was the dumper, that person is even more stupid for adding it. Did the rom you were looking at had on of those fancy intros like other gba roms?

Doesn't that game have a mechanism to prevent people inputting silly and/or offensive words as names?
Does the ROM you looked have an intro?

Don Killmi has a bright idea, since the only time I could possibly think of having words like that repeat with alternate spellings is when you try and avoid a word filter, and if you're going to put in bad words, why have so many repeats and only have them 3 letters?

There probably is a word filter there, since that makes no sense otherwise.

Uniracers for SNES is like that, too, but the list is MUCH more interesting.

I'm gonna be bad for a moment and say that some of those are funny...obviously not the racist or HIV ones but come on who hasn't thought once that Megaman is a bit of a T1T...

Odd find Jigglysaint. Id like to see what other games that have this our out there.

Of that list in Uniracers, I forgot to mention, are the words "SEGA" and "SONIC"... Nope: can't make your name one of those.

Perhaps somebody should contact Capcom on this matter?

Then again, if we do, it might cause them to fire the programmers, leading to no more Megaman Battle Network ever again.

Edit: It's also in Megaman Battle Network 4 at 52380.

I bet you anything it's been in there since 3 or 2. If that's the case then I am certainly the first one to find this.

Look, guys... It's fairly obvious that the list is part of a feature that, as previously mentioned, prevents the player from entering offensive words for something. I don't have the game, so I don't know what the something is, but I'd wager that there's one part of it where you pick a term for something and you get three letters to do so.

As I also said, Uniracers for SNES has a list of vulgar slang words in the ROM, part of which pokes fun at Sega by including the words "SEGA" and "SONIC." If you play the game and try to register your name as anything in the list, it'll say the phrase "Not Cool Enough." and make you pick a different name.

User name restrictions certainly exist, and I'm all but certain that's what's going on in this Mega Man game.

Interesting that "AUM" (and variants) are in there. Who outside of Japan even remembers train-gassing cult Aum Shinrikyo and its crazy leader Asahara?

No, there is not section in the game where you name anything. Your theory seems to be pretty solid though.

Maybe I'll ask on the gamefaqs board.

Do you enter a username at all in the game? Even one area in the entire game that you enter something in? If there is, you know the offset, just change one of the words to something else, and then in the game type in the original word that you had changed. If it allows it now, and didn't before, well theres your answer.

Also, why isn't the obvious PUS in there?

EDIT: nvm, I just read in your post above that you don't enter anything in anywhere.

It could been a censor for a planned feature that was removed too.

It may be for multiplayer, I never tried it but the four letter thing matches the low letter system of many things, you may be able to enter a four letter username.

Megaman Battle network 5 is built upon Megaman Battle network 4. There you have to enter a three lettered name in order to be able to compete in tournaments. Enter any of those words and you get a "Name entry error".
